Hey, little guy! How lucky I am to have such a cute, loving little boy in my life! You are so special to me, and my world is indeed brighter because of you!
You came to us at the age of 6; you are now nearly ten years old, and you have accomplished so much in your young life! Doctors didn't offer you much hope because of your physical and mental handicaps, but you have exceeded far beyond their expectations. When they said that you would never walk, you did. You are now walking. You may walk with forearm crutches and leg braces, but your determination to succeed has allowed you to be able to walk well! You get around better now than you ever have, and we are so proud of you! When they said you'd never talk, you fooled them; and once you started to talk, it seems like we can't shut you up! But we are so glad you are able to express yourself!
And your physical therapy has certainly done wonders for your co-ordination and balance; you get around better than most kids!
And you are so smart; school is really helping you catch up to the other kids in your class! While you may always be behind, due to your mental disabilities, don't EVER let people tell you you can't learn; because, Robertito, you ARE learning; you just happen to learn at a slower pace, and you just have a different way OF learning. But you ARE learning!
You have grown so much since you came to us from Mexico! You are taller than a lot of DS children, and you are slowly but steadilly gaining weight since your last heart surgery. And since you had your last heart surgery last year, you have been doing remarkably well for all the problems you've had involving your heart! While you may still face several more surgeries in the future, the big stuff is now behind us, and you are continuing to grow and amaze even the most skeptical of doctors! And your medication will certainly help your heart function even better than it has in a long time; just be careful, is all I ask, and if you EVER get tired, just stop and rest, and if you need to, use your oxygen and take a nap. It will do you so much good! And if you EVER have any problems, DON'T fail to let us know; we are only concerned about you!!
After all, we ARE your parents, and you ARE our son! We love you so much, and you have blessed us so much!!
Robertito, and also remember this: you are NOT stupid. You are so smart; kids who call you that or other things are wrong, and they shouldn't call you names..or any other kid! Just ignore them, and go on. Don't let their immature behavior get to you; you are MUCH better than that!
