Who Am I Chapter Three

Jane sat across from her school nurse whom she saw regularly; Nurse Hampton who had known Jane all of her life-had been there in the hospital when Jane was born.
Jane had confidence in her because she had been a consistent and steady person in her life. She had given Jane assurances that her late period was not all that unusual, had referred her to Dr. Rydell, to see what drugs might be used to induce it and to monitor her condition because her condition might a symptom of something else going on in her body.

“Ok, let’s go through the routine. I hope you are feeling well today. Let’s start with your weight. Up you go,” Nurse Hampton said pointing to the scale.

Jane stood on the scale, the kind that had the sliding bars and Nurse Hampton slid the bars saying finally “Almighty, you can get down. I want to take your blood pressure and your pulse,” indicating that Jane should sit and place her arm into the sleeve of the blood pressure machine.

“Now,” ” Nurse Hampton said “I want you to relax and think of that vision you use like always. It helps you relax I think take nice slow even breaths. “

Jane had done this many times with Nurse Hampton and each time she did relax allowing the vision to return. It was the same vision each time. She visualized it each time because Nurse Hampton told her to use that vision if it worked for her.

The vision was that of a beautiful room filled with people all dressed up in fine clothes, all looking at her adoringly. They all were beautiful in a strange way and floated before her rather than stood, glided rather than walked.

The blood pressure sleeve pumped up and then started to slowly release air and deflate.

“Did you see the vision” Nurse Hampton was saying. “Last time you said you could almost see faces. Did you see any of the faces clearly this time?”

“No,” Jane said” just like last time, indistinct faces, but clearer than last time.”

“Mrs. Hampton, “Jane said “am I dreaming all this, hallucinating?”
“No, no Jane,” Mrs. Hampton said “it is just your way of relaxing, of meditating-it’s aright.”

“Well,” she went on to say, “your blood pressure is normal for you around 85 or so.

“Now Jane, ” sitting back in her chair, “tell you what I’d like you to do. I want you to,” she hesitated writing on a pad, “see Dr. Rydell and get a prescription from him for the late period. These might work and he might have some of his own ideas about what we can do to speed things along.”

“Ok, she was saying, handing the piece of paper to Jane, “I will give him a call and you can make an appointment. Ok? Are you taking the one’s I have being giving you?”

Jane nodded taking the piece of paper, thinking to herself and feeling a little woozy.

She wondered if Nurse Hampton had been the one. She wondered if Nurse Hampton had been the one who had sent her the emails.

To be continued.

Epiphany by Gary Stephens

“We’re going to use nine megaton warheads in space and we’re not sure they’re large enough to be effective. Why would you even consider using kiloton-range surface-to-air warheads as back-up?” The answer was succinct. “Because they’re all we have.”
