Transporting oneself to an imaginary place works wonders for a rainy day. (A prosetry/flash fiction exploration)

Hunger Pangs

He and his cat

Sit upon upturned suitcases

Peering vacantly out the ocean house window

He and his cat stare together

As the reflections press back

Cloning the vacuum of isolation

The bookshelves behind him

Empty

Kitchen cabinets

Empty

His stomach

Empty

His heart

Empty

Beyond the window

High to the right

Encroaching weather gathers

While to the left

Escaping sun hovers below cloud cover

Resting a few moments longer upon the horizon

Another guest joins him

Perched on the window sill

A roach

A rather large roach

Eyes the storm

Eyes the cat

Soon

Night’s shroud

Will erase the perceptions

Returning his mirrored picture

His room’s embrace

To but a dark cell in his mind

Where bars are ever present

Except when reflection erases them

Today

Weathering choruses precede the night

Its rain quickly turning to flurries

Quickly turning to carpeting flakes

Reflections transpose to memories of what once was

Feeding his hunger pangs

Ice crystal flakes and laughter salad

Alarm clock soup

Plucked innocence under glass

XXX soufflé of web loneliness

Fricassee of conscience forever steaming hot

Wine of repentance

Patiently breathing

Readying absolution

For some worthy day

Without warning

A smile envelops his stare

Waiting out the sun sinking into slumber

The tenacious roach

The testimony of nature’s perseverance

Time’s eldest statesman

Remains stoic

Anticipating the next century

Cat willing

And he?

His feline?

Because reflections know not lying

Living isn’t so bad

There’s always imagination for company

No one writes just like you write, Odin. I mean that as a tribute to your voice. The uniqueness of your language reads for me like a performance so fascinating one doesn't want it to end and cares not about any clock. Your poems are studies. I study them. They always, always deliver treasure. This one's treasure is present in the layers upon layers. "Cloning the vacuum of isolation," then naming the articles of isolation is tremendously effective. The way you introduce a 'guest' joining, we immediately think it is a person. A treat of a trick, as is 'dark cell in his mind,' which had me interpreting a morose synapsis cluster of brain cells, but bars then clarify the meaning of prison. Even the very next line where reflection erases the bars is so visual and literal when picturing the refection (mirror image of himself/room) literally has no bars; they are in his mind. But the coup de grace could well be foodifying the elements of emotional hunger pangs. In the last stanza, I see two meanings of the word 'reflections' both commensurate with the context of this writing....the window glass's cloning of the scene, and the 'recollection' of (reflecting back upon) anything. Both know not lying. Excellent, excellent. ~~ djl
