~When I saw Thomas Wednesday afternoon, his back

arched, standing stiffly, I knew in my heart, the end was

near. Eighteen years of the closest bond I had ever known

would soon be over. By that night, he couldn’t stand alone.

He spent Thursday lying in a box, refusing to eat or drink

even his most favored treats. Vicki approached me with the

option of having him put to sleep. I told her I would have to

think about it. After agonizing over it all day I knew it

would be kinder to let him go before he began to suffer. The

next morning I spent a long time lying on the floor with him,

stroking his fur, and saying all the things there were no

words for. I didn’t think I would ever stop crying that day,

but I finally went back to sleep. I didn’t intend to get out of

bed for anything that day, but Mom and Vicki talked me

into going out to lunch. I was miserable the whole time. I

drew frowns on the paper on the table at the restaurant and

the waiter (named Stephen) tried to turn them into smiles.

Coming home knowing Thomas wasn’t going to be here to

greet us that the back door was hard. I still don’t know what

to do with myself without him.~

Sarah, since the title caught me attention, I had to read this piece while I am loitering around your Den. A very well-penned heartfelt piece, which many can relate. I still remember every pet I ever had, and miss each one of them. I have a pet Chow now and have had him for almost ten years. His birthday is this month. Sometimes the bond between our pets and ourselves is one of the most rewarding things a human can have. After reading your last piece this was very comforting because my Chow is sitting here, and I felt such a relief that he is still around. Heck, I even fought for him in my divorce settlement. Goes to show you how much he means to me. Take care and be well my valued friend.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
