A woman searches for the true meaning of Christmas.

Seems the older I get the less I enjoy the Christmas season.

Doesn't help that my gadabout husband doesn't stay home long enough; he is always working; if he isn't doing that, he's at the bar hanging out with his beer buddies.  I'm usually the one left at home to take care of our three children, all under the age of five.  We have two sons and one daughter: their names are Davida Emmanuela (4), Hiram Ezekial (3), and one-year-old Zedidiah (Zed) Matthew.

Zedediah (our youngest child) has special needs.  Down syndrome, heart issues (he's already had three heart surgeries and faces more as he gets older; he is often in and out of the hospital).  He requires a lot of care and extra attention; this is hard when you have two other children competing and clamoring for your time.

Also doesn't help that I lost my job.  While I am glad to be home with the children, it isn't bringing home extra money, so our Christmas this year will be meager at best.  We will be lucky if we get anything for the children or have a tree.  That's how bad it's gotten.

I am trying to have hope, but it's waning fast.  We are behind on bills and they still continue to pile up fast.  I don't feel like celebrating Christmas.  It's become a major disappointment for me, especially this year.  This year has been horrible, especially when Zed was diagnosed with DS and had his three surgeries.  That's put us behind on our bills; I don't know how in the world we are going to pay them off, as we don't have the extra cash.

The lights and Christmas carols almost seem insulting to me.  I don't want anything to do with Christmas.  I'd rather forget it even existed.  I am so full of despair I don't know what to do.  It's like my husband has abandoned me, Zed, Davida, and Hiram.  My family doesn't call or check up on us and the neighbors hardly talk to us.  We feel so alone and abandoned.  I'm scared we're going to end up on the street homeless.

Why even bother having Christmas when we can't even have Christmas for our kids??  Our children don't deserve to be without anything, especially on a day like Christmas!

Too, too sad story, Karen. But, sadly, so very true for so many families and even more so for so many more families this year. With so many problems, why is this poor wife left alone while her husband hangs out in the bar with his "beer buddies"?

As always, good story with a believable character.
