My name is Dan Higgins; I am a special education teacher. I teach grades 3-6; I teach in the Special Needs room. I have approximately 12 students who are my life; I refer them as "my kids". I can't imagine my life without any of them.
My kids range in age from eight to 13; they have varying degrees of disabilities ranging from autism/autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities such as dyscalcula, dysgraphia, and dyslexia, mental and physical problems such as cerebral palsy, ataxia, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, and Down syndrome.
I have six boys and six girls in my class. Their names are Henriette, Tasha, Eden, Taylor, LaKonya, and Carlie (the girls), Adam, Michael, River, Chance, Yoshi, and John-John (the boys). I love all of them as much as I do my own kids.
Some of my kids have been through hell; because of their illness/disabilities, some miss a lot of school while others seem to exude the picture of health; yet their mental or social disabilities effect their way of life, making them vulnerable to attack from bullies or society who doesn't understand what it's like to have special needs.
This is where I come in. I try to teach them how to handle rejection, bullies, or unfair judgement from people; I try to give my kids creative and fun (and simple) ways to help them cope. Most of the time my kids have done quite well; people are always remarking just how well behaved my kids are.
I have had some help in this, but I don't give myself all the credit. Oh, no. I give most of that to my Lord and Saviuor, Jesus Christ; it is because of Him that I am doing what I do. I have always wanted to be a teacher and when the opportunity arose to go to college, I jumped at it. It wasn't easy, but I made it and now have been teaching for over 5 years.
I chose Special Education because I wanted to make a difference in needy but deserving kids' lives. So that is exactly what I have done.
I pray my kids can continue to reach for the impossible and show the world that even though they may be disabled, they shouldn't be kept from realizing their dreams or obtaining an inmpossible goal. With the right direction and guidance, my kids can make it. And by God, they WILL, with my (and God's) help!
