A couple worries about their three small children after an out of control fire threatens their property.
There is nothing more terrifying to a parent than to realize that their own children may be in innement danger.
Such was the case last year, when wildfires fueled by tinderbox conditions and lightning threatened our area. We were so scared that we were going to lose our lives by the wind-driven flames that were traversing across our area.
What made it worse was at the time our three small children were outside; they were having fun playing; they were not aware of the danger. I am sure they must have smelled the smoke in the air or at least seen flames in the distance. I don't know; but when I saw the smoke and the flames, I got scared. Very scared.
I called out to my husband Duane: "Are All the children in? Do you know where Danielle, Peter, and Colby are? I can't seem to find them; I know they are outside somewhere! Please call them in and tell them to get inside, fast!"
So Duane and I called our children's names. At first, we didn't hear anything; our hearts sank; we were sure that they were caught in the path of the fire nearest our area. Then I heard Danielle's sweet voice saying, "Coming, Mama!" and then saw her form through the smoke-filled haze. I immediately started crying with joy and relief.
Close behind Danielle were Peter and Colby; I was never so glad to see three people in all my life! I caught eight-year-old Danielle, five-year-old Peter, and two-year-old Colby in my arms and sobbed as I quickly herded them inside and shut the door. It was a huge answer to prayer!
We have since moved away from Bastrop; we now live in Galveston. Our home and property were destroyed by the fires; we have had to pick up and start over, but even despite the heavy loss, there is one huge shining star in our lives: we have all survived; we are alive. And it is only by God's grace that we are; it truly could have been so much worse!
