It was one of those nights where I wished things could be different, but knowing deep down inside that our child needed help ... and fast.
Our son, Colbyn Derek, has complex medical issues that sometimes put him into the hospital; the cold and flu season onl seems to make things worse. Well, the other nibht, we were awakened by the sound of Colbyn coughing and trying to get in breath.
There is nothing more terrifying to a parent than to hear his (or her) child gasping for air.
I went running into Colbyn's room, almost too scared to see what I'd find. Colbyn was moaning and thrashing around on his bed. He was trying to raise himself up but due to his weakened state, he could not. His face was blue and sweat-soaked. Tears poured from his eyes. He was absolutely terrified.
It broke my heart.
I yelled for Cameron (husband) to call 9-1-1 for an ambulance. It was clear that our son was in trouble.
While Cam called for help, I held Colbyn in my arms, trying to comfort him. I was crying, too: I always did whenever our son got sick or injured in any way.
I don't know what was going on with Colbyn, but I wanted nothing more for him to feel better or to be able to breathe without struggling. I knew that another hospital stay was probably in the offing, and there was nothing, absolutely nothing, that I could do about it.
