Danny the Spotless Dalmatian
by
Miller Caldwell
Danny the Dalmatian was born with two brothers and three sisters. After three weeks they all had spots, except Danny. Where could he find some spots to wear? He set off in search of them.
He saw a beautiful young girl wearing a red dress with yellow spots. (Danny imagines having yellow spots.)
He met a young boy with spots on his face. “These are not spots. These are freckles,” he told Danny. (Danny wondered what freckles would be like on his face.)
He saw a man sneeze into a blue handkerchief with white spots. (Danny imagined himself in white spots.)
Danny met a sad boy who was ill. “These are not spots,” he said. “These are chicken pox,” (Danny wondered what chicken pox would be like.)
Danny saw a man being arrested. The policeman said “He’s in a spot of trouble.” (Danny wondered what it was like to have handcuffs on his paws.)
Danny found a man working under his car. “A spot of bother here,” he said. (Danny thought oil was messy.)
Danny saw a boy out of his depth in the lake. He was in a spot of difficulty. Danny could not swim so he barked for attention.*
The trumpeter played his solo spot. Danny tried to play a trumpet but it sounded awful!**
A mother told her children to sit on the rug, “on this spot”. Danny looked around for other spots to sit on. ***
Danny saw a dice on a board game. Each side had a different number of spots. “How confusing,” said Danny, (thinking what he’d look like with dice on his body.)
Danny saw a man ask for a spot of milk for his cup of tea. But the spot was not there. (He imagined having milk spots/splashes).
Danny met a friendly Bulldog together with a Dachshund. “You don’t need any spots,” they said.
“But I am a Dalmatian. I must have spots,” said Danny.
Danny set off home in the rain, sad that he had found no useful spots to wear.
A large lorry drove into a dirty puddle as it passed Danny.
Suddenly Danny was a real Dalmatian. He had beautiful muddy spots.
He showed his spots to his mother, father, brothers and sisters. They were pleased that Danny now had spots.
The following day it rained again. Danny’s spots were washed away. Every Dalmatian was sad for Danny once more.
The next wet day Danny sat on the pavement beside a puddle and waited....and waited...and waited. Eventually a lorry passed by and splashed Danny once more.
Danny had spots again! He was very happy now as he realised he could have spots whenever he wanted!
Danny felt he was a very special Dalmatian indeed.
Ends.
Note: Danny’s thoughts are in brackets. Where an asterisk appears, on three occasions, Danny acts out the response.
