He did 23 years in prison, for a crime he says he didn't commit

In 1996, while working on a Bachelors, one of my friends was grief stricken, and became longely after loosing a son while in prison, because he wouldn't join a gang.

In September of 1993, three years earlier, we both had just finshed our bits at Dwight Correctional Facility in Dwight, IL..  What a learning adverture?  Prison!   She was released after doing a back up on a parole violation, on a robbery charge (at some burger king).  She was sentenced to 12 years, did six, violated her parole and have to give IDOC another six years.  Either way, she was released on September 3, 1993.  I was released September 13, 1993.  Since we were two "real" women,  who had done time in the Illinois Department of Correction and after doing our "bits"  we needed to find ourselves a man.  Back then, jails, and prison were filled with what they called "drug dealers, shoplifters, and recidivism, women and men coming back into the prison as fast as their outdate came.  Two to three months later, most of them would be back in,  for violating their probation.  What a bomber!  I thought!  I got six year and I got to do atleast three of those. They only had or have six months to do and they are rite back in here.

At any rate, my friend, had just lost her daughter a  years or two  after our release from prison,  and she was lying on the bed talking to this man as if he was in control of her life.  I thought at first he was a "free man," or a man living in the "free" world.  She was lying on her back, with the phone resting between her head and shoulders,  with her leg waving back and forth.  I could tell that this man was turning her on sexually behind bars.  After noticing her body language, I than asked her?  "Who are you talking to?"  She said, "This guy in prison."  I said, "How did you get to know him?"  She said, "One day he the phone rang, and the operator said, "You have a collect call from a correctional facility, hang up to deny the charges, push three, if you accept the charges."  I said, "So you accepted the charges."  She said, "Yes."  I said to her, "He have you purring and serenading like a cat  in prison?"  She said, "Yes!  I have been talking to him since Pear (her daughter) died"  I said, "Let me talk to him."  I introduced myself.  Than I asked him, "Do you think you could hook me up with a nice young man in there for me to talk with.  I don't want one with long hair.  I would like one who has all of his teeth,  smells good and well groomed.  He doesn't have to be "cute and all too good looking, (because every woman wants a handsome man) I just needed a man who is a man.  Who doesn't "live" in the mirror every day and every hour of the day," looking at himself.  I just needed well dressedman , with all his teeth in front, no bad breath or long hair.  PLEASE!...He can be baldheaded.  He said, " I believe I have the right one for you.  I said, "I am going home now, so give him this number (my phone number) and tell him I said to call me collect"

My so called man, I had been seeing had left and moved to Oklahoma, with a woman who looked just like me his step daughter told me.  But that's another story.  About two days, passed, I received a phone call, with that prison recording, I thought, "This must be the guy!"  And it was the guy...Rite a way, I began to ask questions.  Like,  "Are you married.?  How many children do you have?  What are you in prison for?  When will you be coming home?  How much more time do you have to do? Questions I needed answers to, before I throught what was only going to be a "prison telephone relationship."  Since I was in college.  But it went  further   Than I wanted to know what or who he looked like, since I didn't have a photo of him.  I needed for him to say, I look like a man everybody knew in the world.  Example:  Westly Snipes, Lawerence Fishborne,  example:   He laughed and said, he would send me a photo.  About  month a photo arrived in the mail.  He looked like a clean well groomed  young man.  After seeing what he looked like, he began to call regularly, and I began to accept the phone calls, regularly.  We'd laugh and make jokes over the phone.  He was a good listner, as he would be so very quiet when I am telling him about my day and/or what else that was going on in the so called "free world."  Once I sent him money to buy gym shoes.  Men who are in prison and wants and need a relation ship with a woman, who are sensitive and/or dedicated to their needs.  Once I went to visit him, there was one one inmate, a very very attractive inmate, who woked in photos (inmate hired to take photos).  This man would look at me as if I had no clothes on.  Then he had the nerves to ask me if I wanted hime to buy me popcorn rite before the man I initially came to visit, Andrew.  This incident upsetted my friend badly, until he responded to "I told you this is how it is in here, when a guy has a woman coming to see him, another inmate always has his eyes on the same woman."  It wasn't until he came home in 2006, that I truly understood.  I was dressed in an an African attire.  Since I"d broken up with my boyfriend for almost a year, and to be told I looked nice...what woman wouldn't want an on going relationship with an inmate, even if it was only to be admired.  I was feeling and getting a need from a man who neede me in a unique kind of way.  Only thing, it was impossible for him to have me as we, both wanted and needed to have each other.  We'd talk until the prison phones would shut down.  We'd grew fond each other.  So I continuted visiting him, sometimes staying 3-5 days in a hotel.  It was fun for me.  At least I was not all alone, and sitting at home lonesome, wondering and wishing I had a man's touch.  Plus, it was very theraupetic for me, as I felt secure, as the man I'd grew to LOVE was locked up and I was okay with that, as long as I knew he was coming home to me someday.

Yet, when September 1996, I went shopping for things to decorate my bathroom, i.e., towels, wall paper, pictures.  My home phone didn't ring all that date, I thought it was because Andrew was in route home from prison. Nite time came, no phone call, no Andrew.  Yet, I remained hopeful...Than, my friend called, Linell....I told her the situation.  She said, "you want me to call the prison and see, if he is out?"  I said, "yes."  She called, and returned a call to me and said, "Girl, that man is still locked up."  I said, "you kidding."  She said, "This is what correctional officer told me."  Man, I sighed so loud... I couldn't and didn't want to believe this man had lied and said he was coming home, when he didn't.  I didn't want to believe all along that 'andd "N" number, which he had either done time before then, or had been in prison for almost 10 years and counting.  But it was the truth.  After all of the drama.  I began to do some research and found out that Andrew had been prisons since 1983 and was not elgible for parole until 2006.  It was 1996 then!  All I knew in my heart that I was not waiting on a man to come home. One who had lied about his out date, in order for me to fall for him,

The following day, my phone ringed and ringed...The prison operator, is "saying you have a collect call from an inmate in Illinois Department of Correction."  My mind and my heart was wanting to speak with Andrew as I wanted to know what was his explaination to why he his not home.  When he finally stayed on the phone long enough for the operator to connect him....He said to me.."How are you doing."  I said, "I am good," my usual.  He said, "I know you are upset with me."  I said, "Yes," I am.  Why aren't you home."  Now with his back against the wall, he feel the need to confess and said, "Joe Ann, I am not getting out of here until 2008."  It was 1996 then!  I was in shock, total shock!  Yet, somewhat upset...I'd allowed this man to tell me this for two and a half years that he was coming home in 1996.  Feeling like a fool.  I told him not to call me anymore and that I was not waiting on him for another 10 years.  That was impossible.  Later I called my dear friend, Fahmeeda, who had just married an inmate and told the situtation.  She said, "Girl you gonna quit the man because he lied to you about his out-date.  I said, "Yes."  "I don't need a man to start off lying to me, thinking I would love him more.  He told me a "serious lie."  I didn't want to hear anything she was saying, because, I didn't see any constant smiles on her face, nor did she come back after a visit with her husband with and encouraging words, so I didn't want to hear anything she had to say.  In my mind, I understood one thing and that is:  Misery loves company."  And I was not miserable, she was.  Marrying a man, who is locked up for the rest of his life is not my forte. Yet, I allowed myself to be content.  After all I was working on a Bachelors of Arts degree.  Remember, I too am an ex-con.  Yet, I needed to prove to myself.  I could over come any obstacle that is put before and being in prison is the biggest obstacle to over come once you've done time.  People look at you differently.  They speak to you differently.  It's like you are a curse to society couple with a menace.  Kowing that only the strong survives, helps to shift life's havoc to phenomonel adventure. An adventure where you will know and feel in your heart is for you, because of the change you made for yourself.  Andrew, later said to me, that he thought that if I loved him, it wouldn't make any difference to me, because I loved him.  Well it didn't work out that way.  From that point on, I didn't trust him.  So I broke all ties to him.  I didn't even want to tallk to him.

Until one day, my phone ringed...I thought it was a collect phone call from Andrew...So I accepted the charges.  It was a guy, who at  some point was Andrew's cell mate.  Apparently, he'd gone through andrew letters, I'd written him, took my phone number called and told me that Andrew stole his pants.  I could not believe what I was hearing.  I thought it was a JOKE at first, until I could see how addiment this guy was.  He told me his name was Robert Taylor.  I said to him.  "Do you have an education?"  He said, "No!"  I said, to him, "Do Andrew know you are calling me."  He said, "No!"  I said, to him, "Please don't call me anymore and tell me anything more about what is going in that prison between you and Andrew or anybody else.  And that he should start focosing on getting an education, so you can be prepared for the real world when yo are released from prison."  Adbrubtly, hung up my phone.  About a month after, Andrew called, I told him about Robert Taylor, and asked him to "Please stop leaving my telephone number, address, etc around for his prison mates and/or cellmates to get it.  I also told him what Robert said about how he stoled his pants.  Later I learned that Robert got a transfer, claiming "protective custody."  Andrew also put in a laterl transfer, caught up with Robert in the prison yard and there they had words and whatever else went on.

In January 1998, I was living in Harvey, IL, in an upstairs apartment.  The telephone ring... It was Robert Taylor. He'd just gotten out prison.  I asked what are you calling me for.  He said to say.  Hi... I said. Hi and went on my way... Yet, I became lonesome, and school was out.  He invited me out to dinner and and curious as I was, I began seeing him.  I later learned he was in prison for burgurly/stealing.  NOw, I know I don't need to be bothered with him as I have a lot going for myself.   This is was in 1998, the year I began working on an Masters Degree.  Robert was so crafty with his hands, and I he would repair things around the house, he sorta grew on me.  As I was working on my masters degree, things started coming up missing around the house.  Although my mind was on a "masters degree,"  I could not ignore the fact that money, tools, clothes etc, was coming up missing, and these were all my things.   Now I don't want to be bothered and I grew increasingly angry, because he would give me money, I would place it where I could come back and get it... He would watch and take it back, and when I would go to get it, he would tell me to "look for it!"  When he would have taken it back all the time.  This would make me so very angry, because I felt and thought he was playing on my intelligence.  It wasn't until one day, I placed a real trap for him.  I'd been on him about how he was "user."  He never brought me any money home.  This particular day, he brought home some money,  and gave it to me.  It is what a real man suppose to do, when he has a woman he likes and deeply cares for.  So I took the money, and  I allowed him to see where I would put it.  Sure enough, when I went back to get the money.  It was gone!  Incidently, he was the only one I'd prepared to trap for and he fell rite into it.  Thinking I didn't know.

In February 1999, I applied for Section 8.  As I was tired of Robert stealing from me.  So whe I applied for Section 8 I applied for Section 8 for him too.  I wanted him out of my house.  As he living other place too.  In October 1999, I had to go and get my two grand children from Alabama.  Now I need somebody to be at home with them and Robert was the "unwanted to" candidate.  In February 2000, our Section 8 was approved.  I was so happy.  Now Robert could get his own place and still look out for my grand children at night.

One night after school...I saw Robert riding a bicycle down a one way street, while my grand children was home a lone.  I assume he was out looking to see whose house he could break in.  As he was a true thief.

Andrew changed cellmates.  One I guess, he trusted.  This particular cellmate searched through Andrew's letters/papers, retrieved my telephone number, calling me saying, "Andrew, stole his pants" or something of that nature.  I .  Prison

March 4, 2012

Hey Andrew:

What’s up stranger?  No!  You didn’t ask me to write you.  I am doing this on my on.  I am just wondering where your mind is rite about now.  Especially since you should be coming out of there not too far from now.  Yes, I’ve had you on my mind, nothing lustful just concerns.  Isaiah 61 Verse 1... For the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because HE has anointed to preach good news, to the poor.  HE has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.“  This letter from me to you is to try to enlighten your spirit.  This I”ve always tried to do.  God wants you to leave all of that bitterness you have deep down in side of you in there.  It’s not going to do you any good OUT in this so called “FREE WORLD.”  You must learn how to adapt and realize that don’t NOBODY owe you anything after prison.  You owe You like I owe myself.

I talked to your mom today, March 4, 2012. Of course, I asked her about you, nothing else, because your business is not MORE important than mines.  She said she just got out of the hospital.  NO!  We don’t talk frequently, but sparactically nor did we talk long.  I hope you don’t mind.  I had to tell her about my trip in Hollywood. California.  Man, it’s like a dream came true .  They recruited me from Las Vegas to be on “We the People, with Judge Gloria Allred.  It was so much fun to be on National Television.  …..God knows.  Just to walk down Hollywood Blvd and see all of those other stars name in the “Hollywood Walk of Fame” was awesome, a real dream come true kind of spirit came over me.  So now I have an agent in Hollywood, CA.   It took me 27 years to get this far in my career and it is getting better as I PRAY.   Life is what GOD has predestined you to do with your life.  If we don’t listen, we must feel, and feeling something is much harder to bare.  I Think.  We Must Obey GOD, otherwise we will be punished in some bothersome way.  God’s punishments are like an addict who has a drug habit.  It won’t let you GO!

Do your friend that (young woman) who called me comes to see you and put money on your books.  I hope she is coming to see you.  If not she should, since she was so in LOVE WITH YOU…IT’S what she said.  Not me.  Even if you thought I was too much for you, you could have been nice enough to say, “I don’t want to be with you.”  I could have and would have understood that.  Yet, when life has left you behind and you need to find your way, the best thing in life to do is to ASK!.  You acted if you were ashamed of me.    Oh, I forgot, men who have been locked up a LONG time needs to be educated on what’s going on in the outside world…..It’s like you said.  “Either I get or I don’t.”

I can say one thing and that I tried to help, but you saw me as your enemy, at least this is what you body language told me.  You came home with your negative ASS and tried to make everyone you meet pay for your stupid ASS mistakes.  Think about it!  Nobody owe you anything.  You OWE yourself and you don’t have sense to realize it.  Life is passing  you by and all you have going for you is prison.  I am not downing you, I just want you to see how stupid you truly are.  You have your feet a high school diploma and want even try to enroll in College to make something out of your life, instead you‘d rather HANG around with those other LOSERS and DO NOTHING AND BECOME A NOBODY!  Then you have the nerve to come home with an attitude.  It‘s crazy.  Are you sure they didn‘t put you on Psych medication when you were there before.  Because, it is monsters like you that needs to stay in there until you LEARN how to treat yourself to a “free world good life”  It is possible and we only BELIEVE.  There is a difference. YOU KNOW!

I told you before you came out here, that as long as you didn’t try to come between what Kwiesi and I was doing , you were good.  In this aspect, you did just what I asked you and I am truly grateful.  But now what? What are you going to do when you come home again.  “None of my business.”  Hey, it may not be my business, but believe me, you are going to need someone to help you with YOUR business when you come home.  I’d hate to see you  IN and OUT of Prison for the rest of your life.  You need to go to college on the outside so that you can keep some money in your pocket.  You qualify for a $5500 grant and loans to pay for your schooling,  that you don’t have to pay back…..but don’t do it because I say do it.  You must want to do something  more “positive” for yourself.  You have no kids.  If your mother and father should leave this world before you, what are you going to do.  It appears that your brothers don’t like you.  WAKE UP!  LIFE is passing you by.  You don’t have to be an idiot all your life.  It’s because you choose to be that way.  There are a lot of resources out here for you to enroll in a college degree program, even at your age.  I told you this before.  However, you didn’t listen then, I am wondering if you are listening NOW!  Take this to heart, if you started to school, and believed in your self,  you would not have to worry about anything, but getting your education.   Use these five (5) D’s:  Determination, Dedication, Discipline Devotion and most importantly Desire.  It don’t matter if you’ve been incarcerated, you still qualify for a grant.   Plus colleges have people to assist you in your learning, however if you were so down hearted interested in obtaining an education for yourself and not say, “I am too old to be going to school.“  If you think that way, then you are TOO Old to go back to school.  But I am trying to tell you  and show you how you can keep some legit money in your pocket, drive YOUR own car and get you a decent WOMAN, if need be.  An educated one just like yourself.  Don‘t be unequally yoked.  Don‘t marry, because then your mind will be on your wife and not GOD. 1Cor 7 Chapter, speaks about having a wife and the rules about if you don’t have one, then don’t get one, because then your mind will be on your WIFE, and not GOD.   People outside of your mother and father ain’t going to want you staying with them w/o a job.  Unless it’s a “pussy and dick” situation, and you will eventually get tired of that, because it will take you NO WHERE in life, and because everybody is doing it.  I am talking to you like a BIG sister now, because, I don’t think you need me as a lover, you need me as  maybe you don’t need me as a  friend at all.  I only have a  “good heart” and I don’t want you to waste your life out here on some “bull shit.“  The Bible says there are “threats and lies in the streets where you go.“  Meaning there is trouble.  You know this.   The Bible cannot lie……Your life can be straighten out through the Powers of the Holy Words, (The Bible)  You already know this.  I don’t know why you are put GOD on hold.  You should have vowed to bring HIM out of there with you the first time you came home after all those 22 years.  Then you would not be back in there this time.   Yes, it is sad.  Your environment in which you live will get you caught up, and thrown rite back in prison.  Don’t you understand this?.  I isolated myself from all those people who didn’t mean me NO good, especially my Family.  Family members are the only one who can get close to you and for that matter be hating on a “nigger.“ as they say (I am laughing).

Things are truly looking up for me and Kwiesi. He is “breaking into Hollywood.”  It has taken me 28 years to get this far and finally, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

God Bless you and  Make you Prison Release Request known unto GOD!

Joe Ann

GOD through the Holy Spirit led me to write you this letter, as it would cost too much for me to speak my mind over the telephone. Let me start with how I appreciate the telephone call on Wednesday of last week, and your letting me know that you've heard from the Innocent Project in New York and that they've sent your case to the innocent project at the the Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL., and how they've explained to you what is going on with your CIVIL CASE, and how the case was outlined. Do you remember, it was me who took the time by GOD's given grace to do all of that for you, because at that time, I thought were would be together. WHOOPS!!!! Yet, there is something that I must stress to you. You've told me what you remember, now let me tell you what I remember. I remember your telling me "you didn't want any money" and how your case wasn't going to be paid any attention to. I remember, telling you as I was putting the case in the envelopes at the postal place to mail off, here in Las Vegas, I wanted some money," and that the work I was doing pertaining to the case back in March 2007, was not going to be in VAIN! Do you remember that? I'm always positive, especially when I'm doing the works of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. However, something striked me, when we spoke last, you said to me "there's a lot of people who had something to do with this case." I thought to myself, "who was a lot of people? When it was only me and you working on the case to get it resolved favorably for you while you were visiting here. If I misunderstood you, than I am sorry. It was GOD's work through me that got this case this far. I believed in Jehovah first, and with the intelligence, and many years of studying, and my not letting your words deter me from writing Innocent Project, because I believed in myself as I was writing those people, because than I thought we had a relationship, to be honest. Plus you proclaimation on your innocent, and as I listened to you and saw your mental deameanor on the unlawfullness I saw in the case, urged me to help. Yet, the main reason for this letter is, and to this date is, you never even said thanks Joe Ann, as I still have that blue binder with that case in my closet. You told me that you didn't care what I did with the binder and sounded very discouraged at that time, and now to hear the joy in your voice to date, still makes me very HAPPY for you. Moreover, I don't know why I held on to your blue binder, because when you left, you said " you didn't want it and that nothing good was going to come out of the case, because the woman, said "they don't handle cases after the inmate have done the time." DO YOU REMEMBER THAT? Of course you do! Your confirmation came later on, on the positiveness of this case. Me, I had and I kept the positiveness and faith from eight years ago and all the way through, as I also wrote the State of Nevada and sent you the favorable results from them. Remember that? Not only that, I still have in my files, your high school diploma you earned when you were locked up. Not because I am in LOVE with you, but because of the kind heart that Jehovah put inside of me. Even more so, I felt your diploma and all other papers were too important to throw out! I've offered to send these things to you, but you refused them also. I don't need your confirmation, but every since you've known me, I've done nothing but helped you in some kind of special way, or more ways than one, and this case being sent out from one Innocent Project to another, mainly to Northwestern School of Law in Evanston, IL., is the ultimate! When you called on the 5th of August, asking me if I sent you something, I felt the JOY in your voice. Something I hadn't heard in your voice in a very long time. It's my calling to help people as I pray for guidance to understand people, who feel when people show kindness, they should not be rewarded with a simple "Thank you" first, and anything else pertaining to merits thereafter is a true BLESSING. I pray that you don't forget the hands that helped you when you needed it the most, and that is ME! Yes, I can pat myself on the back, because I am the difference that Jehovah put in your life as far as getting your case to where it is NOW! Again your confirmation came later on in writing, from authorities who convicted you wrongfully about your innocences. My confirmation came when I was diligently working on the case when you were here (typing, asking you questions, outlining and marking, making copies and I even paid to send them out to the right source, plus I sent for you to come to get this done) Do you remember This? You even said your self, that when you were here, how you felt about all the illegal things that happened how the attorney, now judge said and did to you on this case. I needed and wanted for you some so "favorable" recognition for you back then as I do now, to all parties involved, in your unlawful conviction case back in April/May of 2007, and I feel this is of "spiritual POWER!" Do you remember this? I know my purpose in life, some don't. Most people are still searching to find what their purpose is. Yet, I've yet to receive a verbal " thank you" from you regarding this whole eight year ordeal! Still, I walk by faith and not by sight! Knowing and believing in my heart that understanding is the best thing in the world. All I want us to have is some understanding RIGHTEOUSLY!..... So, a simple and sincere "Thank You" is all I am asking from you, and anything elses you do, as far as I am concerned, will be a blessing. Than I will feel you appreciated my expertise eight years ago and NOW on the outcome of your "wrongfully conviction," by the State of Illinois, by and through GOD's Divine Grace. What about it?
Joe Ann
