"Please, God, fix Teddy ..."
This was what I haard when walking by my older son Colton's room last night before going to bed. Upon hearing those sweet, precious words, my throat closed up and my eyes filled with tears.
Even though Colton was only four and a half (going on thirty), he was far more aware of what was going on with his little brother, Teddy, two, who was born with a severe case of spina bifida.
Little Colton often wished that Teddy could play with him, but Teddy's health was far too delicate. He was often in and out of hospitals: if it wasn't yet another surgery, it was because of his lungs and breathing. He often had pneumonia or some other respiratory ailment, some of which were life-threatening. More than once, Teddy nearly died, but by some unseen, unexplained miracle, Teddy had managed to beat the odds and surprised all with his courage and will to survive.
Well, this morning, Teddy had his surgery, and I am happy to say that all went well. He is currently resting in the PICU, where doctors and nurses are tending to him. So far he has remained stable; the medical staff is pleased at how well he is coming along. We know that Teddy's recovery will be long at best, but each day it should get easier, and Teddy should start to feel better with each passing moment.
If anything happens, the staff at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh will let us know, but so far, nothing. If they did call, they told us to say that Teddy was holding his own and tried to give us some encouragement. It's been a highly emotional day, and we are glad that the surgery was a success and is finally behind us. Now we can concentrate on helping Teddy recover and spend time with Colton and let him know he is very much loved by us, his family.
We can only hope that God "fixed" Teddy and that because of the surgery, he can now have a better quality of life. Time will only tell, but we remain hopeful in his recovery.
We will update you another day as to how Teddy is faring. Stay tuned~
