A homeless man tries to keep warm the best way he can. This is his story.

Image of footprints in snow/ice (c) 2013, by Karla Dorman.

 Geez, it's colder than a brass monkey's balls ....

Never mind my name.  Just call me G for the sake of argument.  'Sides, I don't want my real name plastered all over the Internet, so this will have to do.

Right now I'm seeking shelter at the local library.  I have to do something, anything to stay out of the biting cold that's gripped a good part of the country, including Nashville, Tennessee, where I roam the streets.  Yes, I'm homeless.  Been homeless 'cause of some bad choices I made and now I'm payin' the price for it.

Any place where I can get out of the elements is fine; some people have been nasty to me or giving me mean looks, but more often than not, people have been compassionate and have taken pity upon me.  They know I'm hurtin'; it's obvious by my raggedy clothes, dirty hair and skin, stench, and whatnot.  I'm a bum; there's no two bones about it.

The folks at the Nashville Public Library have been really nice.  They know that I'm not gonna harm anybody (and I'm NOT); they also know it's cold and that I am a bookworm, so I come here several days a week to read or get out of the weather if it's cold/inclimate/hot outside.  Mighty nice of 'em!

Some folks have even been nice to me to where they've given me some money, so I can get something warm to eat.  Right nice of them.  I think I may go to the local Golden Corral; it's just up the way from me; yeah, a bowl of hot soup or a hot meal sounds mighty tasty.  But then I'd be right back where I was before I got the money: flat. Out.  Broke.  Tough call, but a guy's gotta eat and get substinance in his body, y'know!

Do people really want me to starve to death just because I may be a homeless bum?? I don't think so! I'm a person too!  Give me a break and treat me the way you'd want to be treated: With dignity and respect!  I know I've made some bad choices; but I'm tryin' to make things right!  I'm trying to find a place or get a job, but again, some people don't want to even bother, which stinks!!

Anywho, I think Alaska moved SOUTH.  Not only cold here, but across the main majority of the nation.  About the only place where it ISN'T is Florida or prob'ly the Carolinas.  Some places are in the negative zeros or teens or even TWENTIES as I type this; and I think 19 degrees here in Music City is nuts ... not on yer life!!  They've also had snow, and I personally am surprised the library was even OPEN.  But they may be closing early; so that means I will have to move on before too long and pray that I can find a shelter before I freeze to death in the open, frigid air.

That is probably the biggest enemy I have to face right now.  Just pray that somewhere WILL be open to where I can lay my weary body and keep warm!  I don't want to die a horrible death by turning into a human icicle!  Thanks!

~G*.

No one should have to go through this. It makes me more and more thankful for a roof over my head and heat...

Shame that our Veterans, who already paid the price for what lousy benefits they might get, are going hungry or are becoming homeless. They should not lack for ANYTHING. Painful write, Karen, but very well done ... maybe eyes will be opened and dollars spent to save them.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Sad that anyone in the USA has to suffer. Where are we spending those tax dollars? Homeless Vets break my heart. Talked to many and helped some through our ministry. Still, there has to be something done to solve this problem. Most folks want dignity and that means some form of work. I know so many in nursing homes who would love to have someone to talk to. Perhaps hire story tellers. These folks have lots to tell and they all need help and prayers. To treat them poorly is inhumane. May God help us for turning our backs from those who served and are now victums of a corrupt syste. Amen

Earth-centric Humanity at the Crossroads by Martin Treon

For the reasons I describe in this book, the world-wide suffering, death and extinction of humanity is very likely to occur, unless nonviolent and democratically determined radical and revolutionary personal and societal actions and changes are taken
