A reminder of the rewards that come from small acts of kindness
I went to the local post office a few days ago. As I was approaching the entrance, I noticed an elderly lady with a small walker trying to push through the door. Immediately, I reached beyond her and opened the door wide so she could move freely inside. She thanked me graciously, and once we were both on the inside, she reached into a a small compartment in her walker and handed me a small pink birdie. As she hand picked the one she wanted and reached it out to me, she said, "I make these by hand and give them to good people. My address is on the bottom along with a reminder of who Jesus is." I thanked her warmly and gave her a hug.
After taking care of business inside the post office, I returned to my car, flipped the birdie over and sure enough, there was an address and a reminder that read; "Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour."
Today that little birdie rides in my car perched up on the base of the steering column. She serves as a constant reminder to me of the rewards that come from small random acts of kindness.

I believe that Jesus was a very good man and a example for all. I also believe in the Golden Rule, because it benefits the giver more than the receiver. However, I don't believe that Jesus is a "savior."
We have only this life to live, because no one, and no words written by men, have shown us that there is any place after this life. Therefore, I am an atheist. That does not preclude me from being as kind and helpful as I can every day. Today, I was waiting for my car to be repaired when a young woman with a cane, quite overweight, needed to go a few blocks where she was to be in day care. She said she wanted me to take her to the daycare, because she couldn't walk to the center. She was insistent, but my car was being repaired. When it was finished, I came back in the waiting room and she was gone. I would've gladly taken her, in spite of her rather pushy attitude, but she called the center and they had apparently come and picked her up.
While we were talking she asked another fellow in the room for money and I saw him give her $10. She asked me to come and pray with her on Wednesday night at her group home where she said she didn't like living with nine others there. I didn't decline or offer and she didn't tell me where it was. Being quadriplegic, Christians often think that I want to pray with them about my paralysis that I've had for 50 years. People have often helped me out of the kindness of their heart. Some very avid Christians have been unwilling to even help me with my urine bag, a simple task that every man does in the restroom without the use of sterile gloves or a face mask. Kindness and compassion does not have a religion.
