Even though the rain and dark clouds created a snails pace for the homebound traffic, the ride after a long Friday was still a pleasure. Very few cars for some reason were on the roads. Red tail lights glared through out the increasing rain. The intensity strengthened without warning causing a swirling action in all directions, blowing gusts of winds rocked the cars in both directions first sideways then up and finally down.
Automatically the visibility dropped below zero slowing down even the few cars on the road, until finally all movement stopped. That didn't prevent the pounding each car received by the increasing gale winds. The rains forced itself upon the cars with such force that this effectively reduced the high speed whipping action of the windshield wipers.
At the same time water covered the highway and darkness started settling in. Debris and rocks bounced off the cars hard shell. Where traffic once flowed easily water now rushed through, beer cans dominated the flow as they could heard bouncing off the black rubber tires. What was once considered a lonely road became a small intense stream of rushing water?
All visible lights were out and lightning became the new source of illumination. Each car tried without success to generate there own form of visible light. Because of the darkness, 5:30 was not easily recognized. The color gray with all its different hues tried hard to filter through the divided sky. It could not fully separate itself from the darkened earth surface. Sheets of rain became so massive it made seeing impossible. A few cars attempted to back up the length of the highway, but because of the poor visibility that task was prevented.
Even the other side of the road was clean of all cars; only sheets of rain mirrored the concrete lake. Where cars could be seen, frequented minutes ago nothing could now was gone. Off in the distance it began to clear as the sky was filled with a pattern of zigzag lightning.
A piercing rumble shook the highway, but that did not create any forward movement, based on all the indications up ahead their appeared to be a serious blockade. Another car grew impatient and attempted to drive backwards through what appeared to be more like a parking lot at a ball game in New York. Clouds bellowed in larger forms indicating a break in the weather was forth coming. That once normal ride home turned into total isolation. Reflecting once again that mankind on occasion still pays tribute to the power of nature. It can still force a full game on us, without our control.
Hours pass and the only movement can be measured in inches. Tow trucks can be seen on the right side of the bypass road followed by state police cars. Everyone else continues to sit. The weather began clearing; people got out of their cars and start milling around lost. Traffic finally started making it appearance on the south bound side. A van even stopped to pass two cans of brew to a friend near by and then moved on.
Yet the rain was trying to hold back as the clouds hung low and close to the ground. Instantly like a signal from beyond it began to rain again and everyone rushed to the cover of their cars. The sounds and rhythm of car doors shutting echoed through the peaceful valley. All ended up waiting in the security of their own mind. Without warning another brief break in the weather came.
Again people wondered out to walk and talk, but nothing in the movement category was possible. Up ahead a radio could be heard crackling as people gathered to hear the news. A mini tropical depression touched down up ahead. This uprooted trees and blew them over the road up ahead. Picking rush hour traffic didn't help those who traveled this section.
Some cars might have gotten trapped by the fallen trees. It wasn't clear and no other information was available. Sitting and waiting was all that could be done. People didn't have much to say as they walked back to their cars. Two hours of waiting felt like a lifetime for most. Nothing could be done.
Sitting trapped listening to large drops of rain pounding on the roofs. No forward or even backwards movement was possible; yet you sat and waited for time too pass. No lights could be seen in the long lines of cars. It was like a line of cars entering some formal function. The bypass roads now were down to a crawl. Again the water weaved over the windshields leaving the illusion of car movement up ahead. The intensity of the rain increased to the point that you could not see, but a couple cars ahead. The reduced visibility and increased water confined all inside their cars.
The concrete highway again filled with running water and at the same time traffic in the bypass roads stopped. The log jam of cars was complete. The water rushed quickly as it flowed in massive ripples, more like ocean waves heading towards their undersized drains. All occupants sat and waited with steam building up inside each of their cars. Now they began to wonder how their families were holding out without them. Concern reach deep into their sole as all waited. What could they do?
Lighting with its electric blue flashes started touching down near them. The spikes were like a wizard's wand straight sometimes straight but for the most part jagged. A full fury with anger was visible. Every one continued sitting and waiting in their rocking cars. The sound effect of thunder rumbled closer and closer to the roads. No one moved, but each watched the lighting games played within the dark.
Time continued to pass and with that the endless waiting for the return of normal activity increased. In the back ground ambulances and fire trucks could be heard. The local and state police kept on responding to the emergency situation within the local area, become trapped in this maze of cars left people close, but all alone. Side by side, back to back with only steel and rubber as their friend, each had a single purpose now and that was getting home. No longer has that become a routine of the past, like yesterday. The darkness of the rain became what was now night time. How long will this last? Time kept on moving, but nothing else did.
A break finally came, headlights beamed into action with that the darkness slowly lost out. First one car moved, and then another before too long a single line of lights began to exit the once vast parking lot. Twisting and weaving through the fallen trees the car lights pierced through this new opening, never looking back only speeding forward. This was nature at his best as the clouds of darkness returned to the spot that once held captive the vastness of our mobile modern society of today.
