I am 10 years old now. I am no longer a little girl (although, to my mommy, I AM; I will always be her little girl). I am quickly headed towards adolescence; in just 3 short years I will officially earn the title of "TEENAGER".
Being 10 years old is a rather awkward time. I am too young to be considered a teenager, yet, I am no longer a young child. I am getting to be too old to believe in Santa Claus (I now know that he isn't real; mommy and daddy are the ones who get the gifts, but I have to pretend I still believe in him, just so I don't upset the younger kids or dash their hopes of getting presents), and I am getting too old for things like dolls or young chapter books; yet I am too young to read young adult novels, and I am too young to learn to drive a car. And I can't put on makeup (unless I am performing, but that is the ONLY time), go on dates or have boyfriends, and I can't be outside past 9:00 on school nights.
It doesn't help that I am short for my age. I look to be about 7 years of age, and I am the shortest in my grade. It is really embarrassing. Because I am short for my age, people tend to treat me like a younger child, and it really bugs me when they do that! I am TEN years old now, and I want to be TREATED like a ten-year-old child!! And it doesn't help that mommy tends to overprotect me. I am handicapped..I use crutches and wear leg braces, use a wheelchair at times, the whole deal..., and whenever I cough or wheeze just a little bit, there's mommy asking me if I need my inhaler; or she asks me if I am having problems with my breathing or need to go to the emergency room! I am glad she is concerned about my health, but COME ON!! At times she can get past ANNOYING, and it really bugs me! I am NOT a BABY anymore!! I am going to be a TEENAGER in just a few short years; I am old enough to take care of myself, and if I need ANY help, I'll ASK for it! But NOT until THEN!!
And I am getting to be more moody than I used to be. I used to cry hardly ever, but now it seems that any little thing can set me off. And I find myself getting mad at mommy whenever she babies me! (I have a good reason to; I am NOT a porcelain doll! I am old enough to care for my own personal needs! I know when I don't feel good or am feeling great, and I know how to care for my asthma or arthritis!! I am NOT a DOPE!!) But mommy still babies me, and it is enough to drive me up a TREE!!
I sometimes wish I were still little; then I wouldn't have so many darn things to worry about!!
p.s.: I WILL say this much before I go..I had a very nice birthday/Christmas. I got another Cajun accordion (I now have 5), clothes, books, and more games for my computer. I also got money and my new crutches I had wanted. It was a very nice day!!
