     Who's Thumping?

For several months, while writing, I would hear a thumping  sound thinking it was the house settling or the pipes or plumbing. Ignoring it for about two months, one time I thought it was time to investigate, after I could clearly hear that it was coming from my kitchen.  I put on my Sherlock Holmes hat, picked up my magnifying glass, deciding to go have a closer look and settle the mystery.
I looked at the refrigerator,  listening hoping the sound would repeat. Nothing, I listened to the micro wave, the dishwasher looking for answers. Nothing.
I went back to my writing, vowing that next time I would faster to my feet and find out what was going on.
The next time I was up in a flash, dashed to the kitchen looked around, saw nothing. Out the kitchen window there was a big blue bird staring at me quizzically and with, I imagined, a little smile on his face.
Defeated I slouched by to my desk sure that all of nature and my own kitchen were allied against me.
Next thumping, I’m up, same result. Nothing. But as I turned around I noticed that I had a plastic water filter in my kitchen window and it dawned on me that the Blue Bird must be the Thumper, thinking that the plastic water filter was a bird feeder. Then right before my eyes he showed up, sat on a branch close to the window and flew right into the window pane. Thump!
The Thumper I thought must after so many thumps might have had his brain rattled, or he was one determined bird.
We stared at each other and I moved away from the window set up a temporary bird feeder filled with water for the time being and back in the kitchen watched him take a drink he had been long looking for.
I sure he thought I was really difficult to train.

Day two
The Thumper is back! My theory is wrong. Water there, so is he, back headbanging. What is going on?

Day Three
Ok, looks like my theory about the Thumper thinking he was seeing a bird feeder in my water filer is incorrect. He came back. Authorsden people said he might be seeing his reflection in my kitchen window and attacking his territory.
So I went out side and there it was my other reflection in that window.
I pulled the blinds down and will wait to see that if the relection is gone or blunted, if the Thumper can save him self from brain damage.

Yes, the birds have a hard time training us. ;-)

You might enjoy a Cardinal that kept coming to our sliding glass door for months, attacking himself in the glass, thinking that his reflection was a rival.

Another amusing story! First, the raccoon ... and now, a bird. It was a delightful read.
