A humorous look at dealing with the preps for a colonoscopy, tied in to health and wellness!

Pic: GiggleMed.com Medical Humor
I'm sitting here this Tuesday morning, off from work, and in front of my laptop anxiously waiting to get this darn colonoscopy out of the way later at the LA Endoscopy Center on Jefferson Highway!

And I just had to take the second dosage of that yucky Suprep formula to clear out my system so a GI Doc can do a "YouTube" of my inside to hopefully find it clear of cancer and polyps!

Time for a little poetry on this matter:

Yes for all of us seasoned citizens who are in the age of 50+,
This is the time when we have to take more of a health focus!

Why hasn't Anheuser-Bush, Coors or, from my beloved native town of N'Awlins, Dixie, come up with a Beer Prep for this?

It was a drag not eating anything yesterday, but the chicken broth that my wife made did lesson some of the pangs of missing her delicious cuisine, such as “Red Beans & Rice,” which most of us displaced 'Yats here in Red Stick still have religiously on Mondays!!!

Late yesterday, when JP, our SLU Freshman son, was getting ready to go back to school after MLK day off, I couldn't sit at the table with him as he enjoyed some scrumptious "Pulled Rotisserie Chicken” that my wife, “Chef Cookie,” had made Sunday from a Holly Clegg recipe – it will have to wait till tonight!

The MLK March for Peace that I attended yesterday at Mt. Zion was special, as I had just begun my fasting from all solid food, but I could indulge in some coffee and sugar (shucks, but no cream allowed on this pre-colonoscopy diet!) that was provided at the end of the event!

And it was so cool to be within arms distance of our new Gov. Edwards as he was interviewed outside Mt. Zion before we started in the March down Government Street towards the BR River Center. The walking with other wonderful folks in the March helped re-direct my “poor-me” thoughts about fasting to a higher concern.

When I went to 6:30 AM Mass at St. George yesterday morning before the MLK March, I realized that I couldn't receive Holy Communion (Real Presence of Jesus Christ) in the Bread Form but was able to receive that in the Wine Form, since that was also offered.

And yes, while I have had to make many a quick run to the “lavatory” for you know what, I did have a Bible handy there to do some “perusing of and on the Gospel of John!!!

Okay, I've been whining and complaining about this too much – as my work buddy, Mike, RN, has noted I may do at work sometimes when he'll blurt out from a few cubicles from me: “Oh no, Keith really wants some whine & cheese!!!"

I actually do give thanks that I have the privilege to take this preventive screening step to benefit my overall health status!

So Men, don't put off colonoscopy or other things like prostate screening (ouch!) like I get every year at the Men's Health Day at Pennington! Our wives need us too much!!! (LOL – I can see Cookie yelling, “Yeah Right!!!!)

As a reward for this health odyssey, after the procedure, I plan to have Chef Maria to take me to "T & T Poboy & Seafood" on Airline Hwy. and Cedarcrest to get some onion rings and a nice oyster poboy that they serve there with their other wonderful cuisine!

And a sense of humor always helps with anything, including a colonoscopy: as someone once noted: "Let your employer pay for this so you don't get into arrears!!!"

I like the humor expressed. Fasting for a day is no big deal. So many in this world go days without eating. Colonoscopy is no big deal. I've had mine without anesthetic and enjoyed the videos. Prior to that, I had a barium enema that was extremely painful and something I'm glad they got rid of. Nobody likes torture.

Finally, I can't for the life of me understand why "pulling" chicken makes it anymore tasty. ;-)
