Toeing the line ...
Having written and published 100 memoirs at ''The 60s Official Site,'' depicting some aspect of my life during that decade, I’ve laid that era to rest for the most part. Now that my second novel, ''An Enlightening Quiche,'' is in production and I await the electronic galley proof, I’ve this need to exorcise my creative demons which languish as I meticulously line up marketing and promoting strategies pre-publication day in and day out.
Just as my publisher provided a tenuous timeline for the entire process, it dawned on me that my choice of footwear over the years exemplifies a shoddy timeline of sorts for trending in my shoes. Without regurgitating my entire memoir, “In My Shoes,” I pretty much “sized” up how I walked the walk during the early Sixties by stepping out into the world in brown-and-white saddle oxfords which my mother frequently applied white shoe polish to. In summers, I trod the earth wearing either a red or blue pair of Keds sneakers. On Sundays, I put my best foot forward inside patent leather pumps with squashed heels, delighting in the echo resounding on linoleum—scuffing it too! In junior high, I followed the crowd in either a black or oxblood pair of penny loafers, making sure the Lincoln heads were straight forward.
While Honor Blackman portrayed Cathy Gale, and Diana Rigg played sexy Emma Peel in ‘The Avengers,’ venturing forth in sleek black leather boots which started off at ankle height and moved up to knee-high by 1966, I owned a white pair which paired well with my skirts and mohair sweaters in high school.
In the Seventies when I began my teaching career and aspired to become a preppy, I played the part well by building a wardrobe of blazers (navy blue, a prerequisite); cable-knit sweaters; polo shirts—redundant Izod in assorted colors—pink, one of them; madras plaid skirts; tan chinos. I had a special fondness for an oxblood pair of Etienne Aigner pumps, and absolutely adored my vast, colorful collection of Grasshoppers.
During the Eighties, I recall corralling a collection of Candies high-heeled, wooden slides with minimal leather attached to the wood by silver studs. Polished toenails were a must standing in those contraptions!
Without further demarcation of ensuing eras, I’ve been trending in Mary Janes, and recently have developed a lust for Skechers which are so comfortable you can walk a mile in those shoes!
Taking stock of trending in my shoes, I’ve never Birkenstocked.
