Total Recall The cool down Whew – its hot! 95 or so here in central Pa. I recall hot days like this when I was 6 years old and living on the farm with Grammy and Pappy. One wash day (probably a Monday) Grammy set up an old galvanized wash tub in the back yard, just outside the cellar doorway. She filled it about half way with cold water and said, “Bob if you want to cool off sit in this tub.” Well, it was a tight fit, and yes it was arctic cold…. I managed to squat ever so slowly down, “whew!” Water up to my sun burnt shoulders, but I was cool! I have an old wash tub just like Grammy''s and every time I see it I think back to those days. If I dwell on good times such as this; they play in my mind like a movie. I thank God for those memories.

My recollection of actually getting into a wash tub was also at my grandmother's place. It was probably 20° below zero outside, so we were in the attic where it was warm because all the heat from the potbellied stove and kitchen stove downstairs rose up. We were naked, so first, grandma filled the tub with ice cold water from the well and then poured a teakettle of boiling water into it until the water was warm enough to settle into and get a bath.
