Well, I am about to tell you. For one thing, I am a child who has it. I was born with the condition, and it has left me unable to walk without crutches or leg braces (although, at times, I DO use a wheelchair, especially if I am at school and/or I have to go to a place that requires a lot of walking).
My name is Corrie. Corrie Gable. I am 10 years old, and I live with my mommy and step-daddy here in Nashville, Tennessee. I just moved here from Dallas, Texas, last year. I am an only child.
Anyways, when I was being formed inside mommy's belly, my spinal cord didn't close all the way, and as a result I was born with an "incomplete" spine. They suspected something was wrong when I was born because I couldn't move my lower half, and I had a big lump on my lower spine, a lump that was soft to the touch, and a lump that was full of spinal nerves. As a result of this "lump", I couldn't move anything below it, and I had to have emergency surgery a couple of days after my birth. I also couldn't feel anything below this lump. I am completely and totally paralyzed from my lower back on down. I am a paraplegic, meaning I can't move (or feel) the lower half of my body. Now, I am 10, and I have had many surgeries since then. But despite it, I am still a very happy little girl, and I still can play just like any other kid.
Because of my disability I can't feel anything below my waist, and I am incontonent, meaning I have no control over my bladder or bowels. I have to wear diapers and/or a catheter as a result, since I can't go to the bathroom on my own; and every few hours, I have to change the bag on my catheter and have someone help with my diapers, so I don't get an infection, or worse; and end up in the hospital again. I also wear braces on my legs and use forearm crutches, which help me to get from place to place; and I also use a wheelchair, as I just said. Sometimes I get mad at God because I am this way, but then I guess there is a reason He made me this way; and besides, there are many more people who have it far worse than me; and then I don't feel so bad. But it is still far from easy, especially if I have to go into the hospital again or need surgery.
I don't like to feel sorry for myself; but if I DO feel sorry for anyone, it would have to be my mom. She has had it bad since I was born; and after I was born, my dad left, and she was forced to raise me on her own; but then two years ago, she met Adam, and Adam and her got married; and now I have a daddy again. Mom works as a secretary at some lawyer's offfice here in Nashville, and she has to work, as my medical care is expensive, especially if I need to go into the hospital or need any surgery. Adam works, too, but he works at a factory; but he is off weekends, and on weekends we go places if my health allows it.
