Year after year you drive back and forth to work. Nothing ever happens in your life except that ever changing life style of growing old. Sometimes strange events make your day last longer wishing it would last forever. This could happen to anyone that lives but it happened to Tedd Beanak. Could it happen to you? Read on and discover how real a dream can be. A mind is a natural resource that you can not afford to waste. Let me warn you this will excite your very inner self. Remember, it could real or nothing, what you make form it is what you are. The fine line of time sometimes becomes invisible, while you feel it can be seen as real.
You start with the ending of another hard day at work and now a long journey home. Hundreds of other people are far from relaxed as they drive side by side on the crowded highway. With this the setting sun's direction can be seen slowly moving behind the horizon. The day’s activity of light rushes to an end, all of a sudden this partially darked sky becomes divided, exposing two bright distinctive clear sections. On one side there was a visible clear red strip. While on the opposite side a gray crystallizing cloud cover appeared. This forced a chilling air to be formed and started to blanket all the traveled roads in the area, never before had Tedd seen dusk being transformed by such a vivid visual process.
In the background of gray he could just about make out those huge barren silhouettes of trees. Fall had started to control by reaching out with its vast power. Most of the leaves had disappeared from their life support system, making its start for nature's new creation. Then without warning that new chilling air instantly created a new cover of fresh dew. The whole region was now under attack. All the cars driving in this peaceful valley were covered in a single sweep. They continue speeding through life's highway as it is their normal course home. Tedd could hear and feel the effects of a thousand wipers running in unison. Being instantly motivated to run in continuous labor in order to fight back what could not be clearly seen.
Even Tedd's vision became somewhat impaired but nothing phased those machines of steel. He now became more motivated then ever in making his routine run home. The frenzy of red lights becomes new signs of how effective the dew was on all those traveling through the night. Proving again that mankind will not be stopped by the simple weapon of Mother Nature. With this defiance acceptance of the present environment was real.
Tedd looks up at the dark sky, trying to find that red strip of light. It has vanished. With that the blanket of dew disappeared. No sign of wetness can be seen. The roads are dry. Normal total darkness finally settled in. With that car headlights started their piercing action of the darkness with methodical vigor. Night has been finally confirmed.
Most of the cars continue their race, which they had accepted like many times before. Tedd races towards his own goal. The area he is heading for can be seen spread out over a vast region that was once rich in farming. His home is in a small peaceful valley. This suburban community is inhabited with around 35,OOO people. The residential makeup has many typical families living in the environment of their geographic region. An example of how a modern development did not destroy its vast farming enterprise allows you this view of a scenic landscape. Located between the vast mountain ranges is his small community. Coming from the mountains a river slowly cuts a path down. Even with its small size it has the power of dividing a larger city from this peaceful community. On a clear day you could normally see those vast ranges rolling off into the distance.
While most of the cars still continue with their speed in and out of the traffic patterns, Tedd's car breaks out of that controlled pack, finally heading home through his familiar country roads. The setting is lonely and very dark without the lights of traffic to guide the way.
Tedd finally was able to relax, listing to some soft music in the background. With the slower pace he approaches out of the dark into a massive bright glowing yellow light. He had to slow down. That light affected his vision causing him to almost stop. Finally he got somewhat accustomed to the brightness. Then a huge mist of spiraling water swirling straight up into the air, came down towards him.
This pattern hit the road and at the same time completely covered his car. Leaving him ill prepared in handling all these effects. Then his car seemed to be drawn closer into the glowing pattern of water. At the same time the yellow hue of light increasingly grew larger. This completely broke the solidness of the pitch black night.
Then without warning the large glow turned into two separate beaming rays of piercing lights. You could almost feel the effects of two enormous cats like eyes staring right back at you.
This drew the car and driver even closer into the light pattern of control. With the car now totally swamped, as the force of water volume increased.
The wipers are turned on high, but could not fully recover from the heavy load. They failed to keep the windows clean. You heard the sounds of the motor grinding away under full labor.
Tedd had this eerie feeling of the unknown. Tonight for some strange reason events were affecting his normal drive home pattern. Be forced to slow down to almost a complete stop. Then right dead in front of him he saw one large light staring at him. Somehow he felt like being under some kind of spell. Slowly he continued driving within what formed to be a tunnel of water.
Then suddenly without warning his car's speed increased. At the same time the spray before him got larger and brighter. Now he could hear his heart really beating hard. It was over heard as the frantic wipers kept on trying to over come the furry of being trapped.
Finally a breath of fresh air was heard coming from Tedd. He finally recognized what he had been following, nothing but an oversized wheeled tractor pulling a giant wooden water barrel. Two large flood lights were mounted on top of the fenders. A breath of fresh air came from Tedd. What a relief! Slowly passing what was left of a dying water spray, which was now reduced to a small shower. A small amount of water was still hitting those huge spinning wheels. This set up was used in watering farm crops during the growing season or sever dry spells, passing the slow moving tractor which effectively broke the trance. The road ahead was dry and pitches black.
Finally Tedd pulled into his driveway of his modern living complex. This development only allowed the house colors to be different.
Sitting there on 33 Riverside Circle allowing his heart to become normal again, he felt a little strange about the past experience. Thinking how easy it was for him to be affected by a common every day occurrence.
That feeling almost had me captured. He thought to himself.
Slowly getting out of his car, the chill of the night surprised him. It was colder then he had expected which forced him to move quickly into his house.
Home at last as he finally settled down into his favorite seat of comfort, the ride home for some reason tonight was more stressful then he had ever experienced before. Tedd thought to himself.
Getting up after a while he headed for the shower. It felt great allowing the hot water to just relax his still tense muscles. This helped him to unwind and boy did he ever need it, especially after nightly activity. Once out he felt a strange cold chill passing through out his body while walking into his bedroom. But feeling colder right after a steaming hot shower was considered normal. Some how he knew that this was the same type of chill he had felt cutting through his body outside. The sharpness felt almost like something invisible was attacking him.
Walking around he noticed how strange and peaceful it was in the house. For some reason no one was home. He did not expect this, but it was appreciated. Relaxing and resting on his bed he fell asleep very easy.
While in this relaxed mode and silence sleep became very easy. For some reason his subconscious mind was activity reaching out to learn why his family of five was not at home? No children, no wife, nothing.
What started out as a simple rest lasted till the early morning hours? Still no sounds from his kids, no running and screaming gave him all the rest he required after the long nights rest.
Slowly stretching he felt better then he did last night. Getting up he again wondered where his family could have gone. That dead silence was very unusual in his home. Watching the early sun breaking into the morning dew was always fascinating as he stands motionless near his bedroom window. He could see the full sun's strength dominating away the control from the dew, which had to work hard all night to generate allowing the warming rays of the sun to hit his cool body, while admiring the bountiful process and its effects of the fresh day’s sun. Relaxing and enjoying his peace, but then he remembers about his family. They still were not home. Now it became too quiet in the house.
Tedd started aimlessly pacing around walking from room to room and occasionally looking outside. This old habit he learned from his mother. It was her nerves tendency to pass time. During on of his stops he looked outside and spotted what appeared to be a maintenance worker on his front lawn. Somehow it didn't make sense. But every now and then Mary, his wife hires someone to spruce up the place. It really wasn't that important, so he just ignored it.
Tedd sits back in his favorite easy chair and relaxes after having a good breakfast. With very little self control he fell asleep. This now was very unusual. Tedd had never adapted this type of routine before.
When a sound of heavy pounding quickly wakes him from his catnap, sitting up he waited and listened very intently to hear where the sound was coming from. At first he thought that his kids were back playing and making up for lost time. No, it was not them; the sound was coming from the roof. Tedd was sort of bothered by this. Quickly getting dressed he walked outside.
Looking up he could barely see, but it appeared that it was the same man as before that had been working on his front lawn earlier. Here he was pounding on what looked like shingles on the very peak section of his roof. He could see the sun reflecting off the shiny flashy squares. All this was very unusual because the material was visibly sticking straight up.
Tedd didn't understand what was going on, as he called out in the direction of the working man.
"Hey mister, what are you doing up there?"
No response, like it had fallen upon deaf ears. Again he is calling out, but still no answer, shaking his head. An uneasy feeling started creeping into his mind when he walked back into his house, closing the door behind.
After sitting there for a while he decided to call the police. The pounding had not stopped. For some strange reason the operator immediately cut in as he started dialing the number. In fact it was real quick when a voice broke in after the first two digits and asked.
"May I help you sir?"
"Yes I'm trying to reach the Southville police station."
"I will connect you sir."
The phone rings.
"Police headquarters."
"Could you help me? My name is Tedd Beanak, I live up on 33 Riverside Circle."
"What seems to be your problem Mr. Beanak?"
"There is a man working on top of my house."
"Have you tried talking to him?"
"Yes, he has not been responsive."
"We will dispatch a patrol car but first we must process our morning shift. Will that be okay with you?"
"Yes, thank you". Hanging up Tedd sits there wondering what was going on. First the operator cut in and then there was something strange about the police response. Oh well.
The day today started off like it ended yesterday, still on the strange side. Then it reached him, even today there was something different about it. Exactly what that was, he couldn't pin point, but it was.
Walking back and forth in his living room the pounding continued coming from his roof. The sound could now be clearly heard throughout the house. It almost felt like he was in a huge echo chamber.
Good thing the family was not home. This would have raised a lot of questions. That reminded Tedd to started looking for some note that his family might have left for him. He needed to get his mind off what was happening outside.
Looking for some visual notes or signs, he did not find anything. The closer he searched for some old traces the less he found. Now he was starting to wonder if ever had anyone living with him. Then for some reason he questioned himself if he ever had a family. All this was out of scope for him.
Every known item belonging to them was gone. No clothing in their closets or bureaus. Nothing in the normal places, any toys or models anywhere, may be all this is a dream. He thought to himself.
Sitting down patiently waiting for the police to arrive, maybe they can shed some light on what has been happening today. The noise from the roof finally stopped. It felt so peaceful and now it was dead quiet. Comfort in all this did not come easy for him.
Getting up he starts walking around again. This time he made sure not to look out of any windows. Habits are hard to break as he stopped to peak outside of the front window. Relieved in the fact that the man wasn't there he walked into the kitchen for another cup of fresh coffee.
It just felt so peaceful to relax a little. He knew that most of his day was spent doing nothing. Tedd recognized that his present situation required some serious thinking.
Sitting back, he looked outside from the kitchen table. To his surprise he was able to see the man working in his back yard this time. He could tell he was digging in the ground. Wanting to look closer he got up. Tedd saw him move slow and deliberate. He was working on those shiny plates sticking out of the ground reflecting right into his direction.
The man first dug a hole then these square plates were placed into each hole. Lose dirt would be dropped around the plate. Using his feet he would set them down hard. This turned the loose soil hard. The other half stayed buried below ground level. Only the shinning part of the plates could be seen sitting above ground. With this new observation Tedd wanted to know if the same plates were in his front yard.
Quickly he ran out of the front door for some reason he didn't want be spotted. Getting near the street he was able to see same shiny plates reflecting above the ground. They were spaced approximately two feet apart. Bending down he touched one. Then using both hands he tested their strength, nothing doing, hard as steel. The plates were firm and held in place securely. He couldn't believe what incredible force it took for them to be held in with such holding power for only being buried today. This same earth that he knew had been turned over earlier for some reason had the strength of concrete.
Running to as many as he could, none of them budged. Giving up he ran back into the house. First he slowed long enough to glance up on the roof. He found similar metal looking flashy bright objects standing straight up on the very peak. Even the spacing looked to be the same. This didn't surprise him for some reason.
Once inside he locked the front door. Fear now started taking over as he sat against the door. What the hell is going on? I must be losing my mind. Why am I hiding in my own house and from whom?
Two hours passed since he made his first call the police. No patrol car ever arrived, nervously getting up to pace the hallway. Keeping one eye on what was going on outside. The man continuously worked without ever stopping or taking any type of break.
Tedd then noticed something strange about him. He always had his back facing the house. This was even true when he was on the roof. You could not see any of his real facial features. In fact he was always in a maintained kneeling position. He would never be seen standing or would his face be exposed too him. It made it hard to tell if he was really normal, none of this helped ease Tedd's mind.
Picking up the phone he started dialing, after only two numbers the operator cuts in. "What number are you dialing?"
Tedd quickly hangs up, sensing something was still wrong. Now what? He asked himself.
Why not try the phone next door? Slowly opening one of his side windows he sneaked out, running quickly across the lawn. This type of action was not normal for him. He always had such a routine normal uneven full family life. And just like that he is now in some kind of dilemma.
Getting to the neighbor's house, he stopped in front of the door, quietly knocking. No one answers, waiting patiently for someone to come. No one does. Deep inside of him he started feeling a degree of increased anxiety. His heart started racing again. With that an uneasy feeling comes back, knocking a little harder this time, still no answer.
Very slowly he turns the door knob, it was open. Standing there wondering what to do next.
Entering the hallway with some caution, looking around he didn't see anyone. Knowing what the house layout was like, finding the phone was easy.
Hastily picking it up him looked around in the kitchen. No one was around as he dials the police station. No interruption this time.
"Sergeant Bill, may I help you?"
"Yes this is Tedd Beanak on 33 Riverside Circle; I would like to report that a man has been working on my house without permission. Yes, this is the second time I have called. The first was a couple hours ago. Have you dispatched a patrol car yet?"
"Mr. Beanak, we sent a vehicle up into your area. In fact, the officer went to your back door and even checked your yard, nothing unusual was spotted. He could not find anyone on or near the property. Everything was real peaceful."
"Are you sure?" Tedd asked. "Maybe he checked another house? Please send someone up, I will gladly show anyone what is going on here." Tedd now had panic in his voice.
"Relax Mr. Beanak, when the officer reported back, he stated very clearly that he made every effort to find you. This included ringing the door bell and some hard knocking on your front door for what lasted couple of minutes." The sergeant reassured Tedd.
"How positive are you that he came to this address? Because I have been home all this time, I did not see or hear anyone knocking on any of my doors."
The sergeant responded. "We will send another car up into your area. This time the officer has orders to report directly to you."
"Thank you." Tedd's heart gradually quieted down. Hanging up the phone, he left the kitchen and headed back outside through the front door, stopping long enough to quietly close the door running back into his home, through the open window.
Once safely back inside locking the window he stands there wondering why his neighbor was not home. Why the front door was left unlocked?
Many different thoughts were racing through his head. Then for some strange reason he decided to check all the remaining doors and windows. All were locked; this reassured him in being secure in his home.
The weather outside was very clear and bright looking. The sun had worked it way up heating all of the area. Very nice for a fall day walking around Tedd now half hardly looked outside to see if the mystery man was around. Not seeing him in the back yard was good. This helped calm him down some more. Slowly he was gaining back some feelings of control, over those creepy feelings. No more noises coming from the roof also helped.
Walking into the living room him looking outside, there he found the man now working bent down on the front lawn. This no longer surprised him.
Throwing caution to the wind he yanked open the front door at the same time he started shouting and running.
"Hey you, what the hell is going on out here?"
No answer or even any acknowledgement that the man heard the question. "Hey you, what are you doing to my lawn?" Tedd calmed down a little, using a more gentle tone, nothing.
Then he forced the same question with a stronger shouting voice, it had a lot of anger in it. The results were the same nothing.
You could see the man's hands were working with those metal objects implanted earlier in the ground. Tedd began to pick up speed actually running down toward the man. Then something strange happened. He was forced to slow down to a walk, but still heading towards the worker's direction.
At this point all he really wanted to do was get a closer look at what was going on. Then a strange cold feeling forced him back. At the same time it was mixed in with a degree of caution. His fear signals increased to a new high. The chill then started to penetrate deeper through Tedd's body. He was forced to stop for some unknown reason. His feet couldn't take another step in the forward direction.
It felt strange just like he was glued to this one spot. In fact it was more like some kind of gravity force was holding him in place. It prevented any movement in the forward direction. His body was starting to feel colder and with that weaker. Still he couldn't make out any new features.
Then without realizing or thinking, Tedd had turned around and ran uncontrolled back into his home. Locking the door, panting hard trying to relax, wondering why the police had not shown up yet. You can never get them when you really need them. He thought to himself. Tedd was now determined not to move from the front door until the police arrived.
About a half an hour passed but no one came. Slowly getting up, he decided to peak out of his front window. The man was still hard at work without any real movement. Tedd kept on the look out for some cars driving by or people walking, nothing not even a dog or cat could be seen.
Suddenly the once bright day turned quickly and noticeably darker with a gray sort of setting. It almost felt like the appearance of a heavy fog rolling in. How could that be it was only the middle of the day, another new puzzle?
The reaction in rubbing his eyes was natural. No change, his vision stayed blurred. All this happened so instantly. It was sunny and bright one minute, then the next it was dark.
Nothing made sense. Then Tedd's anxieties quickly build up again, walking around in a dazed condition at this point. Will this day ever become normal or is this it?
Walking into the kitchen he thought that for a split second sunlight was visible. His imagination must be playing tricks with him. Blinking his eyes, he thought for a while maybe some fog really did roll in covering this valley. The weather conditions lately have created some strange atmospheric reactions.
Now what? He thought to himself. Nothing makes sense any more. Then it got darker more like it was going to rain. The mist only left you with the appeared and effects that it would likely rain. It never rained.
The police also never came. He couldn't call again. So deciding to sit it out was his only choice. Tedd fell asleep while sitting in his living room chair completely exhausted from the mental fatigue of the day. While in this rest mode for some reason he was able to get some real visible flash backs of what was once his family life.
Air rushing through the flames of his roaring fireplace made him feel right at home. Everything became so convincingly clear and distinctive. People's voices could be heard in the other room. They were talking and having such a good time with laughter overriding their conversions. Sitting there his eyes opened while the aroma of burning wood slowly crept out into the living room. Each flame became a visual pleasure of dancing shadows around the vast open room. With that he watched the flames increasing their dance of freedom. They grew with helpless splendor and danced with its own kind of magic, knowing it never wanted to die. Mixed within the smoke was a clear distinctive aroma of fresh pumpkin. This strong flavor now permeated all of the surrounding air.
Tedd remained in a trance watching the flames within the warmth of the fireplace. Feeling comfortable like many times before hi just relaxed. Mean while in the kitchen, laughter could be heard coming from children of all ages. Two of the younger craftsmen within the group were busy being creative. Each was performing their delicate art of pumpkin carving. You could almost feel the effects of the knifes, slowly piercing into the tight orange skins. While the others watched with excitement and reacting like normal children.
You could tell the very act of carving was a form of reward for the pumpkin's long growth. Their final glory came when two distinctive features appeared. These final facial features would be reflected by the creations coming from each of the young craftsman's hands. A new art character made its appearance known. Clapping gave the sign of approval as candles were carefully placed into the hollowed bodies. The increasing orange glow added a final glory to a flickering smile with enormous eyes. This had finally given them an added meaning of glory. Both pumpkins where placed in adjoining windows. It would give true pleasure for all passers by regardless of age, a welcome sign of lights that could be seen from afar. This reflected an everlasting glory of the heart. It gave pleasure to all. They would know that even orange growth can have meaning. This joy was especially created for the children young of heart regardless of age. Then after a while the burning candles reach down to the bottom of the now fading pumpkins. The glory of the orange glow was gone.
Suddenly Tedd was startled and woke. Opening his eyes he was amazement because he couldn't see anyone or could he smell the smoke or pumpkin. Getting up he quickly checked the fireplace. It was cold and left no signs of ever being warm. Sweat was now pouring from his forehead. Wiping it with his shirt sleeve he walked around the house. Looking to find some signs of life, the kitchen was empty. Going from empty room to room, nothing was found.
The outside appearance had not changed, it was still fogy looking. Not knowing what to do or make out of his situation, he sat down patiently waiting on the couch.
Still he tried to put together what had happened since coming home last night. The full impact on how it all started was now reaching his brain. Some how he was alone, that he was able to see. No family or any of the neighbors were around to help him. What did it all mean? Tedd thought. He couldn't find the answers, but something definitively had changed.
Trying the phone again, this time he called work. After dialing two numbers, the operator cut in. Hanging up faster then he had ever done before. Sitting there he tried many random number combinations, always with the same results.
Frustration started building again as he got up and headed for the front door. Opening it he looked around saw no one but he ran out anyway. His car was the closest to him. Jumping in he soon found out that the car wouldn't start. All this was maddening. Quickly getting out he slammed the door so hard it echoed throughout the peaceful area then running in a panic mode down the driveway.
Looking for some kind of help approaching the end of his driveway he was instantly stopped. His head first hit and then his body met this invisible obstruction. It felt like he hit a taut tarpaulin. Bouncing off him just lay on the cool ground.
This was no fog, thought Tedd while looking up into the strange looking material.
What in the world is happening? Slowly moving on his hands and knees he forced himself to try getting up. First he checked the grayish almost clear substance with his hands. Using one finger first he carefully placed it on the surface. It actually felt more like some kind plastic material. Similar to what was used by him many times before at work. The difference was it had more of a soft polyethylene texture to it.
Then to his surprise he found out that the material was fused to those metal shiny objects implanted into the ground earlier by the mystery man. Quickly looking around he couldn't see the man anymore.
Then Tedd slowly backed out and stood up straight. With that he could see the plastic heading upward towards the peak of his roof. The way it was now formed left you believing it was similar to a large tent. Running quickly to the back, it came right back down into the ground. Here he tried to force himself under one of those sections. He did have the power required to budge the material because it was hard as concrete.
Time seemed to have stopped. A terrifying feeling now came back and it was for real this time. Standing there staring at the almost clear cover, waiting more or less for something to else to happen.
Then without any warning by impulse he ran back into the house trying to fight back all those strange feelings. Rushing down into the cellar he came back with a ladder. Resting the ladder on the side of the house slowly now he climbed up onto the roof confirming that the same light gray substance was attached to the peak of the house with the same strength. All this didn't help him cope because he didn't know what was really going on. Hastily he got off and ran back into his cellar leaving the ladder there without caring.
Coming back with his an ax and a portable propane torch in hand slowly walking towards the back yard once he got close enough to the material he had to feel it with his hands again, strange but it was slightly cool. In fact it almost felt sort of clammy, like dew had settled on top of it. Or maybe some moisture had condensed on the surface.
He couldn't figure out why it felt so cool while it was very warm in his yard, running his hands up and down on the material surface now shaking his head while placing the torch on the ground.
First he wanted to test the surface with his ax, taking some hard swings at the material. Nothing happened. It didn't even leave a mark on the surface. In fact it bounced right back. It was amazing. Dropping the ax he picked up the torch. Allowing his torch to get real hot but the material was not effected. It didn't even leave a warm spot on the surface.
Tedd finally adjusted his thinking, for some strange reason he was trapped. That man working all morning must have been responsible for all this. Now the only real question left was. Why would anyone want me trapped inside my own house and yard? Having no clear answers he walked back into the house, completely dejected, sitting down as all of the equipment dropped on the floor. Tedd was trying very hard to unscramble the full impact of his present situation. Could this all be a dream?
This thought motivated him to get up and check the refrigerator. It worked. The house still had all of its power. Everything worked. The light went on and off as he tried all the switches. Walking into his bedroom tired and upset, but he knew one thing for sure he didn't want to fall asleep.
Looking around he couldn't believe what was happening. Here he was standing near an empty picture frame of what once held his family. Sitting on the bureau were blank spaces of gray. Quickly scanning the other locations all were the same. No pictures were left of his kids and wife. All were missing from within their frames. Quickly he reached into his pants pocket, removing his wallet. With the same results, nothing but blanks, just another event that didn't make sense today. He wanted to shout. But no one would hear him.
So he decided to look around a little closer for any possible physical signs left of his family, nothing, completely void of any signs, like they had never existed. Yet he can remember leaving them yesterday morning as he headed for a normal work day, now nothing.
Tedd wanted to know what happened to his family. Then it occurred to him he was having a hard time remembering what his wife and children really look like? Now he began questioning his own thoughts of the past. Thinking real hard he wasn't able to retain much of his family. Only a very limited visual memory was retained deep within him. For some reason only small traces were left and they would not be altered.
Taking a piece of paper from the table, picking up a pencil he tried to force himself to draw a picture of what he could remember of his wife and children. To his surprise the pencil did not leave any marks on the paper. He could draw a house, a car or any other objects. But when he started remembering his family, no marks appeared.
Now in pure exhaustion he fell across his bed. Finally giving up, he threw the pad and pencil on the floor. His brain felt the pressures of this long day. Little did he know it was far from over? Tedd tried hard but he can't prevent the sleep mode from over taking his body.
During that rest period a rough movement caused his head to be jerked straight up. This woke him and he couldn't believe what it felt like. The sensation was very common. Concentrating hard to distinguish if it was in his imagination or was it a dream? No, it can't be!
Then his fears were confirmed as he could see and hear the different objects rolling around on the floor. The pencil he had thrown down earlier with other loses objects started shifting and sliding between the walls of his bedroom.
The sensation was a rocking motion the same kind he used to get during his early childhood years. He knew it would mean that his whole house had to be in flight. How could that be possible? It must be a dream. His mind was dazed from sleep he thought.
His natural instinct now was to get up. He had to check out what was really going on outside. But with that an increased motion forced him back down onto his bed and he became pinned down.
Finally the motion slowed into a gentler rocking. With this sensation he lost the desire for getting up. Sleep was all he now wanted. As his eye lids became heavy. With this he fell into a sound deep, deep sleep. No motion or bright sun shine could wake him while he rested like never before in his life.
The bright sun is reflecting off a car full of women as they approach the 33 Riverside Circle, rolling to a stop right in front of a noticeably dark green beautiful empty lot. They are busy talking about today's events. One of the women asked, "Why have we stopped?"
"Oh this lot has always interested me."
"Why because it's always so green and well maintained?"
"Yes it is very picturesque."
They all sat there admiring its beauty.
Mary was one of the passengers spoke up. "Who keeps this lot so clean? Someone has to be cutting the grass. It can't be this good looking, without a lot of hard work?"
"You know that is an excellent question. I'm afraid I do not have the answer. No one really knows, but it has been kept up like this for a long time." Came the reply.
"You know what, of all the years that I have lived in this town, for some reason this place feels like home but I can't remember ever seeing it like it is today." Mary continued, "I wonder why no one has ever built on this location? Houses are all around here. Land must be very much in demand up here?"
"That is true , but no one really knows who owns this lot of land. It has been like this for ever. But now that you mentioned it, I have never seen anyone cutting the grass or watering the lawn. No work appears to be required in maintaining all of this green beauty."
Mary opens the car door and slowly gets out. She started walking on the lawn. She was amazed on how soft the grass felt under her feet. It almost left you with a cushion type feeling, similar to walking on a quilt of cotton. The pile was real short and neatly trimmed. Mary just stood there wondering in amazement. How out of place this lot really was. There should be a house on it.
Walking back towards the car she stops. Something about this lot gave her a warm friendly feeling. How could that be? It’s just another empty lot. She continues heading back to the car. Entering she sits back and listens to the on going conversation.
"There have been so many different stories about this lot."
"Like what?" Mary broke in with some interest.
"Oh for example, the police department had some calls for help from this very location."
"How do you know that?"
"A friend of mine knows the police chief and as he tells it, it was weird. No one was ever here. That’s how the story goes. In fact there could have been a house on this lot many years ago."
"You’re kidding?" Mary said.
"No, but," she stops.
"Go on." Mary added.
"It was very strange and even harder to prove. The way I heard it was that a select group of city hall workers could remember some very faint facts. When they were questioned ..." Stopping again.
Mary's interest now was now peaked and wanted to learn more, "What was their response?"
"It was a very long time ago."
"Did the police ever figure out who made those calls?" Mary asked.
"At first they considered them to be some kind of practical joke. But the way the story goes. For a while the calls persisted. Then, just like they started they ended. Nothing ever was heard from him again."
"That is really strange." Mary said.
"Checking the Town Hall records, did not help to clear up the question if a house had ever been built on 33 Riverside Circle. There was one strange fact in the records. This land area had been a part of an old farm complex. It had been sold off and subdivided into many building lots called the Riverside Housing Development. No other transactions or records could be found showing that this lot did not have a house on it, nothing, not even a deed in the old archives. In time, like everything else it was forgotten."
Mary was still interested in this story. In fact she wanted to know more about the man that had called from here. "Did this mystery caller ever identify himself?" She asked.
"That he did. But his name never checked out. The FBI ran a tracer on him. They could not identify him by using his address. What was required were finger prints, date of birth, place of birth. Having only his name to go on they ran their check, but it came out blank."
"What was his name?" Mary asked.
"Tedd Beanak." Replied the women.
"That is a strange name. How could anyone make that up just to call the police?" Mary asked.
"Well that's what prompted them to check it out in the first place."
Mary sat back wondering why all this felt very familiar. She knew deep in her subconscious mind that this empty building lot meant something to her, but what was not clear.
The car started and left the area as the women continued viewing the rest of the scenery.
Mary's mind thought about the name Beanak. That name wasn't all strange to her. She had a slight tingle deep down in her soul about all this. Having an active mind was her calling card, but not wanting to be a fool was her reserve. Her women's intuition played on her mind. She just sat there relaxed wondering. What was so special about today? She had these different feelings for some reason.
She broke out of it as the car stopped in front of her home.
Not even realizing she was home so quickly. "Thanks for the ride, our school meeting was success."
Waving she walked into her lonely house. Being the sole bread winner was not easy for her. Time became the only influencing factor in her now busy life. Living in this house felt so strange, especially today. Living here now over ten years but still she can't call it her home. Something about it was missing. The warmth she once felt became so distant. She knew that those feelings were a part of the resent past. Thinking back was always hard. For the most part her husband's memory seemed so far but yet so close. In some ways it seemed like it was yesterday morning that he disappeared. For some strange reason today she was able to recall her feelings very clearly.
Mary went through life day after day accepting her new role with a lot of difficulty. Most of her fears came from her children. Loving her husband and living without him was not fair. Everything seemed too happened so quickly. Overcoming that type of loss was not natural. But she had accepted it just like getting dressed in the morning. You have to it every day whether you wanted to or not.
Her feelings became somewhat worse lately mainly because of her children. They accepted naturally their role of family life without having a father.
What really concerned her about that was she felt that some outside force had molded their minds into accepting all this. In fact the subject of a father had never even been mentioned. Mary was concerned that this could cause them an everlasting hardship and turn out to be a serious problem.
She could not understand why they forgot their father that quickly? But then she herself was becoming very limited in any deep concentration. Remembering what her husband looked like was even hard. After what seemed to be a set time limit her mind would react in an automatic shift over to a non related subject. She had no control in that process.
She struggled with her evenings, but for strange some reason she was always kept busy. Every now and then a streak of loneliness came upon her, but it again only lasted for a short durations.
Sleeping was always restless, complete with tossing and turning. Getting enough sleep for her next full day's schedule of activity was no problem.
For some reason the memory of waking up one morning and finding her husband Tedd gone came back very vividly. She could not find his clothes or any other signs of him ever existing. Knowing that she had happily married wasn't enough. Then like a shade closing on her mind, that brief segments of time was now gone. But today she clearly knew he was no more, that emotional strain was coming back stronger tonight then ever before. For some reason the void between what happened today and what was once real came back into clear focus.
Again it lasted very briefly as Mary finally was able to settle back in her bed waiting for the short night's rest called sleep. For some strange reason tonight it became very difficult. Her mind always had this small segment of desire allocated for her missing husband to return. May be this will be the morning, and then she would wake. Always wondering why he left, never fully capable of understanding why he hasn't come back. She would again relax and with that her mind would float into a peaceful cloud of tranquility.
In those very clouds, Tedd was sleeping inside a large sparkling tent like shaped object. The blue clear sparkling sky had accepted him as it slowly turned the vast shape into another distant star.
Out in that vastness of the universe, Tedd was in his everlasting peace. But deep inside his conscious mind he really wanted to get up but that desire was modified by his unconscious spirit. Trying hard but waking up became impossible, even though knowing all his life he was a light sleeper. The dreams continued with the real sensation of sliding down this enormous mountain of sand.
He did not keep on falling between the soft mild feeling sand which never really trapped him, nor did it allow him to gain much speed. This constant everlasting moving sensation caused him to stay in a mellowed out state. With that he was completely care free. At times Tedd's body would slow down almost coming to a complete stop, but for some strange reason it never did. All this movement made him forgets the other feeling he once had. With this it became very easy for him to stay relaxed.
We are all waiting, watching, wanting our own time to be as long as possible. But we all know our life can not be everlasting. We now see more cars on the highways then before, all are heading home for an end of another day and start of another night.
While Tedd is still in his semi restless mode and everlasting sleep, he was slowly becoming a part of what was defined as grains of time. Which made up the very mountain he was sliding down from? He now felt very happy with these elements of time, with every grain of sand of his own mountain slide which he feels and considers being everlasting. Up to now men like Tedd had always taken for granted what could never be gotten. His life became just like the sands of time that can not be forgotten.
THE END, of just one day in time, is it yours or is it mind?
