A dark prosetry way “Pawnbroker” might have gone. Although an immoral way to right a wrong, often desperation makes a hard call. (Image by “Pawbroker.”
Magnifying Eye
by Odin Roark
He slipped the jeweler’s magnifying loop
down from his glasses.
She impatiently waited.
“It was my grandmother’s engagement ring.”
He looks closer, turning the diamond to catch a different light.
“She was married to a baron.”
He removes his magnifying loop from his glasses. Takes another,
more powerful magnifying loop from his drawer.
A nervous glance over her shoulder
at the icy drizzle coating the sidewalk
makes slippery a wave of ominous black umbrellas,
pushing her emotions to ominous disquietude.
As she turns back and leans on the counter,
an impassioned whisper meets dead ears: “I can show
you the appraisal.”
The little ring is slid across the counter.
“Fifty dollar.”
“You can’t do that to me. I’ve rent to pay.”
Void of any expression: “Forty dollar.”
“You’ll have me evicted.”
“Thirty-five dollar.”
“You’re evil. That ring is an heirloom.”
He pushes the ring closer to her hand.
“Evil? No. I’m just a pawnbroker, Ms.
I have rent to pay as well”
“Not this month.”
She pulls out a German Luger
and empties its arsenal in his head.
“This was my other inheritance.”

I haven't dealt with pawnbrokers, but I do believe they provide a useful service and must profit from what they do, or they wouldn't be in business at all.
