In the baker's shop
I was in the baker''s shop and saw the cakes were selling at 50 cents. Then I saw a cake only a little larger selling at $4. I wondered why the difference was so large and asked the assistant. She replied ''It''s Madeira cake.''
For those who did not get the joke, Google Madeira cake as suggested by my friend Ronald Hull. Then pronounce Madeira cake as
''My Dearer cake'' and you''ll hopefully get the joke.
I didn't get the joke because I never heard of Madeira cake. So I Googled It and discovered that it was one of my all-time favorite cakes. And I thought it was called poundcake because of its weight!
I found the idea of a cake selling for fifty cents to be something out of the 1950s. I am fond of carrot cake made by my partner and two of her sister-in-laws. They don't count their labor of love and I forget to count the calories, so the cost isn't very much, only for the carrots and other ingredients, along with weight gain on my part.
But recently, my partner brought home a large slice of carrot cake a friend gave her. It only cost $15! Assuming that there were 10 slices in that cake, the whole cake cost $150. And, although there was generous cream cheese frosting on it, along with caramel and chocolate toppings, it was not nearly as good as those homemade ones. Quite an inflation from those cakes for $0.50.
