Well there are other ways humans have attempted to organize society.

Religion

During the latter part of the Roman Empire, and down through the middle ages, the organizing principle at work was a sharing of power between the State and Religion. Most of the time a religious leader and a secular leader vied for power. But for much of the period religion held sway. And a bloody time it was. Catholics killed Prostestants, Spanish kings fought English kings, religion provoked, prolonged, bloody wars.

And, still to this day it continues to provoke bloody wars between Christians and Muslims, Jews and non-Jews. We have not eliminated religion as a source of bloodshed and religion is now more a call to arms rather than a call to peace.
Thus, as a way to organize society for peaceful pursuits, religion is not a reasonable choice.
In fact, this country was founded by individuals seeking religious freedom.

In reaction to this murderous religious zealotry we have seen the rise of reason and the rise of the Enlightenment. Here the reaction was to eliminate religion as a factor which divides us and to utilize reason as the way we interact with one another. We are still seeing these ways of perceiving the world compete.

Reason has given us science, some say democracy, freedom, justice and other items we currently treasure, while religion hold sway over millions of people.

It can be seen these two ways or organizing society continue to vie for the hearts and minds of men.

Which will hold sway, we cannot as yet, say.
