A subtle reminder through wrapping paper...
Although retired from the teaching profession for a number of years, and remiss in socializing with my former colleagues, the email grapevine keeps me apprised. While the passage of time has distanced me from my former life, I will always cherish the memories cultivated by my former students. Likewise, I’ll never shake the inextricable bond forged from working alongside fellow teachers in the foxhole of Northern Lincoln Elementary.
Saddened to hear that one of our alumni, Nancy, has been battling an illness and could use some cheering up, catapulted me back to our heyday of teaching! Not for nothin’—Nancy reigned supreme as Queen of Sunshine. Under her auspices, we partied heartily and rose higher for any charitable occasion. She was always up for good clean fun and pranks too. In her second-grade classroom, where it counts, Nancy was clever, innovative, and creative.
A sharp dresser, I recall entourages of shopping trips at her suggestion—once, we packed inside a limo bound for New York. A bundle of energy and go-getter, I’ve no doubt Nancy’s sunny disposition will overcome a temporary setback.
So, how does a cynic provide cheer to a woman who radiates sunshine? I’ve no idea. But, I’ve boxed up a piece of my heart, ready for shipment—autographed copies of my recently published novels. Nancy was kind enough to show up at my very first book signing ten years ago! So, I aim to please the palette of an avid reader while recuperating.
When rummaging for wrapping paper to swathe the box, I came across several sheets of holiday wrap—all except one, its motif that of children representing different ethnicities holding hands.
Coincidence? I think not!
Rather, a subtle reminder of two teachers striving to break down barriers and make a profound difference in the foxhole alongside their students.
