Reminiscing about a fun Church Music Ministry Blunder ... singing the wrong Gospel Acclamation . Mass during Lent!
As someone who has done music ministry per guitar in many church gatherings, such as Mass and for weddings, I have had my own share of Blunders' Moment Blues."
In this Season of Lent, we refrain from saying and singing certain phrases to emphasize the penitential nature of our life-long, lived-out Easter journey.
Well once I forgot to omit singing "Alleluia" before the Gospel Reading, but quickly got some smiles from the singing congregation, as well as a forgiving facial gesture from the priest, who aptly noted the following in his subsequent Homily:
"As you know, Confessions are more available in this Season of Lent - when we like to say "The Light is On," so please take advantage of your chances to whisper alleluias to me there!!!"
Church rituals can be quite confusing. Makes me wonder why we have to have them at all.
I was told that while singing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah that I should make the H silent and sing Alleluia. Just like I was told that the great Sistine Chapel artist's name was pronounced, not Michelangelo, but Micelangelo, as in "meek", not Mike.
But when the Jewish Leonard Cohen wrote his version of Hallelujah. He clearly pronounced the H by singing Hallelujah throughout. Go figure…
