Colby Ryan is my name. I am 7 years old. I have brain damage. I had meningitis when I was a baby, and it caused my brain to get hurt.
Because of my brain being hurt, I can't do a lot of things without help. I am in a wheelchair because I can't walk. I am retarded, and it takes time for me to lean new things.
I can't feed myself (someone--usually Grandma Rosie, who takes care of me--has to feed me), and I need help when I have to go to the potty. (I wear diapers.) I also need help with buttoning my shirt and pants because I can't do this by myself.
I can't read or write yet. I only know colors or animals. I don't know a lot of things because my brain was hurt. I also have problems talking, and I can't talk much. I mainly make sounds, and my sounds are happy or sad, depending on how I am feeling.
As you can see, I need lots of extra help. But Grandma Rosie says that I am a very good little boy. She loves me, and she takes very good care of me.
I love to go to church. I love hearing about Jesus. I know He loves me, and I love Him, too! I also love to watch "Blue's Clues" on TV, and "Between The Lions" and "Sesame Street" and "Caillou", and that's about it. 'Bye!
A Note From Grandma Rosie, who helped her grandson write this:
My precious grandson is a Gift from God, and there isn't a day where I don't thank Him for Colby! He is a living little Miracle from Heaven, and he blesses me each and every day!
My Colby was a normal little boy in every way, but when he was 6 months old, he took sick with meningitis, and it caused him to have a fever of 108 degrees, which severely damaged his brain. Ever since he hasn't been the same, and he requires a lot of extra attention and medical care. He is in a wheelchair, and he can't walk. He also can't talk. He is severely profoundly mentally retarded, and he will always need someone to take care of him and his personal needs, even when he becomes an adult. If he could write or talk, the above piece would be what he would want to say to those who don't understand him or his medical problems. So I wrote it in the way HE would have wanted to, and I gave My Colby a "voice".
If you were to get to know him, you would find Colby to be a very cute little guy with a huge Afro, immense brown eyes, and a round face with fat cheeks; he is absolutely ADORABLE! And when he smiles that HUGE grin of his, well, I'll tell you..it just MELTS my heart each and every time! He loves to watch tv, and his favorite show is "Sesame Street". He also loves to go to church with me every week, and he loves being with me. See, his real mommy didn't want him, and so she gave him to me; so now I'M his mommy BESIDES being his grandma! He's been nothing but a little joy ever since, and I feel privileged to call him MY child! He is a MIRACLE, and I love him more than words can ever say!
