A loving tribute...
The ride home, preceded by the ride “there”—the green mile along a farewell journey with precious cargo to the local animal hospital. Alongside me, on the passenger seat, inside a pet taxi, my 17-year-old Himalayan mix, Misty.
The eldest of two feline companions, she let me know in the way cats do, it was her time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Prior to our scheduled appointment, I had a one-sided conversation with her, which I’m sure she understood in her soul.
I had adopted Misty in 2002, the year of my retirement from teaching. One of several kittens residing with felines from three different litters in a private home, she was the chosen one. Not yet weaned or trained to use a litter box, I provided mother’s milk replacement and “tutored” her in toilet training. I’ll never forget how she managed to run up and down stairs on such short legs.
Misty transitioned peacefully at 11:22 a.m. on February 21, 2020. I have a keepsake snipping of her fur in a heart-shaped, glass trinket box. When her cremains are ready, I will place the cedar box on a shelf alongside other mementos.
Even though I made the right decision on her behalf, the ride home without her was solemn. Also on my mind—how Hope, my 14-year-old domestic shorthair, would react when I got back.
No surprise, she ran and hid.
Spent and in need of a nap from the distress, Hope came around and cuddled with me. She took Misty’s usual place alongside me and licked my hand. I articulated what both of us were thinking. “We need each other.”
My heartfelt compassion to all dedicated caretakers who must bid farewell to their fine-feathered and furry companions.

Perhaps it is time to think about kittens.
Ron
They really are great companions on the journey.
My prayers for your peace and solace, Eva.
