A birth mother's message to a child who is about to go to another country to be adopted by a family.
Dear Ngoc Tam:
I look at you sitting there, in your wheelchair; waiting to board that giant silver bird that will take you to your new home in America; and my heart breaks and my eyes fill with tears. I am doing this because I can't provide for your needs here; and you will have a much better life in America.
Ngoc, I am sorry if I haven't been a better mother to you or your ten brothers and sisters; I tried my best, but with things being the way they are, that is next to impossible. Maybe one day you will understand why I did this, but I think you will have a much better life in America with your new family, the Pearsons. I know now that in America you will be called Hayleigh Ngoc Michelle Pearson; but to me, you will always be my little Ngoc Tam Yung. I know you will probably forget all about me in time, but Ngoc, I will never, ever forget you; you will always hold a special place in my heart. And besides, I couldn't take care of your medical needs as well as you would have wanted; so this is another reason why I am doing this. I am sure your new family will be able to help you get around better than you are able to right now; and I am sure you will get to fulfill your wish to walk with sticks or metal on your legs.
Ngoc Tam, you will always be my little girl, and I want you to know that I love you more than life itself; and this is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. But I know that, deep down inside, that this is probably the best thing for you.
I love you, my darling Ngoc Tam. Please always remember that when you get to America and start your new life!
