This morning, the Space Shuttle, Columbia, was heading back to Florida after a successful mission when tragedy struck. Somewhere over Texas (near Dallas, I think; that's what the news people have been saying), the shuttle suddenly blew up and disintegrated; and the space people lost all contact with the crew of Columbia. Seven astronauts (6 Americans, and 1 person from Israel) were lost as a result.
I didn't see it happen (I was in bed, asleep), but maman woke me up and she was crying. When I asked her what was wrong, she told me; and I have been incredibly sad ever since.
Maman tells me that this was the second time a space shuttle blew up and astronauts were killed. The first time was in the l980's, somewhere, and that space shuttle blew up something like 25 seconds into its journey towards space. That space shuttle was called "Challenger", and if I remember correctly, maman was telling me that there was two women on that flight, and one was a schoolteacher. Her name was Christina McAuliffe.
I watched the news, and they showed the shuttle in the air; but it was all in pieces; and they said it happened somewhere over north Texas. Oh, I hope my cousins, who live in Burleson, are okay! And I hope the others who live in Texas are okay!
May God be with those who lost their lives in the Columbia shuttle disaster, and may He bring comfort and peace to our sad nation as we come to grips over what happened!
