In my latest short story entry "Will Fame And Love Return / Thursday June 28, 2007, finds Rick Randolph having returned home from his doctor's appointment in Baltimore, receives a phone call from his friend Martin Karre who has news to tell Rick about his ex wife, singer Alicia Reynolds and her parents.

Martin tells Rick that Alicia's parents have told her that she needs to start writing songs for her CD when she finishes her house confinement ends in the spring of next year.

Martin also tells Rick that he feels Fred & Carolyn Reynolds has big plans that they haven't made public yet.

Will Fame And Love Return

The Long Road Back

Elk Neck, Maryland

Thursday June 28, 2007

The next evening after Rick Randolph had returned home from his trip to Baltimore, his cell phone was ringing once again, this time the caller ID read Martin Karre.

Rick answered the cell phone and said, “hello Martin, how are you”. Martin Karre said, “well how did the doctors appointment go”, Rick responded, “I got back home this afternoon and the doctors appointment went well, i have another appointment with doctor Donaldson on Wednesday July 18, 2007 and he said if all goes well, that I can start working out at the stadium and if all’s well after that, I will be able to rejoin the team around Wednesday August 8, meaning that I would have been out injured on the injury inactive list for around 120 days”.

Martin Karre said “that’s good, you’re making progress, but one of the reasons that I called was that I have news about your ex wife”. Rick responded, “oh, this should be interesting”.

Martin Karre said, “well the situation is shaping up, Fred and Carolyn Reynolds are apparently telling Alicia that they want her to start writing words to songs, then putting to a music score, they are attempting to get her ready to make a comeback by putting out new songs when her house confinement ends in the spring of next year.”

Questions immediately went through Rick’s head and he asked “Do you mean that she will be putting together a compilation of her songs on CD’s?

Would any of them be played through the radio stations? Ahhh! I’m just wondering whether or not her CD’s will sell?” Martin replied, “her parents

have a plan and apparently they are putting it all in motion, and she will have to go along with it if that means they are going to control her career from this point on. The Reynolds know people who they can call upon for assistance, who will gladly help them and open doors that are normally closed to others. I think that they have some big plans for her. They have had enough of Alicia wasting her life away. She had a fairytale life, but Alicia ruined it for she had the best life that a woman could possibly have.

Martin was chuckling, then said “yes, I did get that impression and so did my wife, Dianne.

Rick ended the phone call saying to Martin, “thank you for the info and the heads up, I am sure that one day, sometime in the near future we will be hearing about it.”  Rick then ended the call and turned the phone off and said to himself, “it will be interesting to see where all of this headed”.

Hi Stephen:

A much-improved chapter! And it is becoming more interesting! You have more direct dialogues now in your story. One thing to remember is that at the beginning of a quotation of a dialogue, it always starts with a capital letter.

Also, one does not "reply" to anything unless there were questions asked. So your dialogues could go like this:

Questions immediately went through Rick’s head and he asked, "You mean she will be putting together a compilation of her songs on CDs? Would any of them be played through the radio stations? Ahhh! I'm just wondering whether or not her CDs will sell?"

Martin replied, "Her parents have a plan, and apparently they are putting it all in motion, and she will have to go along with it if that means they are going to have control over her career from this point on. The Reynolds know some people whom they could call upon for assistance, who will gladly help them and open doors to Alicia that are normally closed to others. I think they have some big plans for her. They have enough of Alicia wasting her life away. She had a fairytale life, but she has ruined it."

Okay, one last thing I want to mention is that you need not say that Rick said to Martin, or Martin said to Rick. You have already told your readers that the two are having a direct conversation over the phone. There is no third person around. So simply, Rick said, or Rick asked, or Martin replied is enough; or sometimes you don't even have to say who said it, or who replied, the readers would already know who said what since there are only the two of them talking to each other.

I hope this helps.

Sandie :)

P.S. Hi Stephen: Since we are good friends on FB I find myself speaking more freely to you when I placed my review to your work. If at any time you wish that I didn't just let me know since most of what I've said were of my own opinion. I respect your friendship too much to have my opinion gets in the way. Xo
