As news reports from across the globe focus squarely on the recent, evolving Taliban incursion of Afghanistan, one can only imagine how many lives are being tormented and lost by this ruthless army of extremist terrorists. Yet, even in this uncertain, harrowing time, God is still the one whi is ultimately in charge. In fact, I believe there is a series of miracles that God will provide for His hurting people caught in all of this mayhem. Here is one such Afghanistan incursion miracle that hits really close to home…

William, a lifelong, dear friend of mine, has a son named Rafael who has worked as a US government independent contractor in Afghanistan for many years. While watching the news last Saturday about the early incursion and possible fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, it quickly dawned on William that his son was directly in harm’s way, as he was stationed at embassies in Afghanistan. William was crest-fallen as reports revealed that the situation there was deteriorating and escalating rapidly.

William felt so helpless, as he watched the news and realized that if his son, Rafael, stayed there in Afghanistan, he would likely never see him again. He knew it was just a matter of time until the Taliban reached his post, the very place where Rafael had been assigned. But what could William possibly do to help his son from across the globe?

Grieved and not knowing what else to do, William instinctively began praying fervently right away, storming Heaven for God’s holy intervention with complete abandon. He had never prayed like that before. For two full days from Saturday through Sunday, he warred in prayer for the life of his son, Rafael. Anguished and pleading for God to help his son, spare his life, and bring him home to safety as soon as possible, he prayed unceasingly. Exhausted from the angst, worry, and ‘storming heaven,’ he then decided to try to get some rest. That night, on Sunday, the phone rang and it was Rafael. He had called to say he had just unexpectedly arrived back in the US. It turns out that at the same time that William was begging God to help Rafael, God was actively answering his impassioned pleas for God’s help!

“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Luke 11:9

So What Happened to Bring Rafael Home?

 On Saturday, just as William stormed Heaven on his behalf, Rafael’s commanding officer told him he was letting him go—that his “services were no longer needed there,” and he had arranged a flight home for him immediately. Rafael was baffled, as the Commander did not explain why, and Rafael did not have access to the news reports that William was watching to know that things were unfolding. He knew that things were changing quickly there, but Rafael did not fully know what was transpiring—only that he was precipitously sent home from his mission without explanation. After Rafael was in flight while leaving Afghanistan—as William was on the other side of the world praying for his safe return--news reports revealed that the Taliban was actively taking over embassies there—including the one where he had been stationed. Truly, as an answer to William’s urgent prayers, God airlifted Rafael to safety! What a Mighty God we serve!

 God Provides

This is an extraordinary example of how God provides timely, practical help for those who trust in Him and seek Him in heartfelt prayer. God does and will do abundant and extreme miracles for those who believe in Him. All knowing and powerful, God is there for each of us, for the asking, through His Son, Jesus Christ. The incredible, unmatched power of fervent prayer is undeniable. Yes, our Wonderful, Merciful Savior, Jesus, loves each of us unconditionally and profoundly, and stands ready to hear our anguished pleas. He works things out on our behalf as He deems fit. It is my belief that William’s pleading with God was instrumental in—and the catalyst for—God saving William’s son’s life.

What a mighty God we serve—all glory and honor belong to Him. Hallelujah!

If then my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven…”

2 Chronicles 7:14
