In my latest short story posting "Will Fame And Love Return / Wednesday June 20, 2007" finds Rick Randolph at his home in Elk Neck, Maryland recuperating from the injuries that he sustained on the opening day of the baseball season. While relaxing one evening he receives a phone call from his former manager Bill Falstaf who has news of of a high school boy who was the number one overall draft pick during baseball's player draft. Bill tells Rick that they would make for a great up the middle second baseman, shortstop combo and his dream is that of acquiring Rick to mentor Drew Forsythe to make it possible.

Will Fame And Love Return

A Look Towards The Future

Elk Neck, Maryland

Wednesday June 20, 2007

It was a summer Wednesday evening, Rick had finished eating his dinner and was sitting out on his porch with the sliding glass doors open and the summer breeze filtering through the screen doors.

Gazing out towards the Chesapeake Bay, Rick was watching the beautiful colors of the sunset. Rick’s cell phone started ringing, Bill Falstaf’s name came up on the caller ID. Picking up the phone, Rick answered it, saying, “Hello my friend, how are you”. Bill replied, “I am in the office monitoring the major league draft and our draft pick’s”

Then Bill continued, saying, “The overall number 1 draft pick was Drew Forsythe, a 17 year old shortstop and a 5 tool player who played for Palmer Valley High School, in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, whose dad is football hall of fame quarterback Daniel Forsythe of the Philadelphia Hawks and is the great, great grandson of baseball hall of fame pitcher Franklin Forsythe, who the Forsythe pitchers award is named for.

Rick said, “that’s tremendous, a top prospect who you can build a team around”. Bill spoke up saying, “When we sign up this kid, we are going to immediately bring him up and make him our starting shortstop. I want this kid to our centerpiece, but, I would wanted to have you around to mentor this kid, but, I have tried acquiring you, but, the commissioner Cameron Stanwyck continues to get involved in our team’s baseball operations, especially player acquisitions, by nixing any deal that we attempt to make, especially any deal that involves you”.

“Just what does he have against you, and wasn’t he the one who tried to stop you from leaving Baltimore when you wanted to come back to Philly”, Rick asked. “Yep, he’s the one and the same”, Bill replied.

Bill Falstaf then said, “I really believe that the two of you could be the best up the middle combo in baseball, I just want to see you heal from the injuries that you sustained”

Rick replied that he would be going to Baltimore next Wednesday to Dr. Dennis Donaldson for a progress check up and we will see what he says.

“Fantastic”, Bill responded, then said, “Well, I gotta go, just wanted to fill you in on what’s transpiring”.

“That’s great” Rick said enthusiastically, “Chat with you later buddy”.

Ending the conversation, Rick sat for a few minutes looking out at the dwindling sunset at dusk and the darkness of the evening settling in, then he got up and closed all of the sliding glass doors and returned into his den for the rest of the evening.

That would be wonderful recruitment to have someone whose father and grandfather had already built a name for themselves. The seventeen-year-old may not be too hard to train.
