Yet another family who have taken in special-needs kids into their hearts and home. (They have met the Sandusky family at adoption seminars or at picnics put on by Holt International.)
My name is Dalton Q. Yancey, and I am the father of five special-needs kids my wife, Christina, have taken into our hearts and home. We live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
I am a schoolteacher, and my wife works part-time as a nurse; and we have three girls (Korianne--9, Winter--8, and Stormie--7) and two boys (Adam--11 and Birch--5). All of our kids are adopted, and all came to us from Vietnam.
All are also disabled.
Adam Hunyh has mental retardation and a heart ailment, and Korianne Faith and Birch Isaiah both have spina bifida and get around by way of a wheelchair or forearm crutches. As for Winter Hoa Promise, she is deaf and mute (she communicates by sign language). And finally, Stormie Thuc Sky has attention deficit disorder (ADD), is hyperactive, has Tourette's syndrome, and has emotional issues. (She was molested by an uncle, and she is prone to behavioral problems due to all the trauma she had at the hand of her uncle. [Her uncle is now in prison for sexual assault and child molestation.])
All of these kids are wonderful in their own right; but all provide us with moments of chaos and challenges; but we wouldn't trade them in for all the world. They came to us from Vietnam, needing a family and a home; and we were more than willing to take them in as our own. We tried to have children of our own, but were unable to; so this was why we made the decision to adopt. We decided to adopt special-needs kids because too many of these kids are older or are handicapped; and not many people are willing to give them a home, let alone, a chance. So we prayed and fasted over this decision; and it turned out that God gave us the "okay"; and so we adopted not one, but five, precious angels.
We have met many wonderful families who have adopted special-needs kids at the picnics that Holt International (our adoption agency who handled our adoptions) put on during the summer; we have met the Pearsons from Texas, the Evanses from Ohio, The Porters from Oregon, and the Sanduskys from Tennessee (now THERE is a FAMILY; they have taken in OVER 40 special-needs kids into their family and have given them love beyond measure; you ought to see them in action to believe it!). We have also met the Diamonds from Tennessee and the Terwiligers from Georgia.
We have since become friends with these families; and each Christmas we send each other cards and the latest news about our perspective families; this way we can keep up to date as to what is going on in our lives; and we can also pray for each other whenever the time calls for it.
All I have to say is this..if it were not for God, we wouldn't have Stormie, Birch, Adam, Kori, or Winter; and He has blessed us abundantly by bringing them all into our lives. We are indeed fortunate, and we give Him all the praise and glory!
