Trust: Where Would We Be Without it?

Whom do you trust? Trust is vitally important to living a happy life. Where would we be without it? Trust is essential to our daily life, physical and mental health, peace of mind, and especially to our relationships—with both other people and God. We know it can take some time and discernment to recognize who is worthy of our trust, and who is not. Yet, the process of finding out whom we can trust often involves trial and error.

Surely all of us have trusted someone, and later had regrets about doing so, as things went awry for whatever reason. Such experiences can leave us reeling--disappointed, perhaps, anxious, sad, and riddled with fear, even angry. It may even leave us unable or unwilling to trust other people in the future. We have to be cautious about whom we trust. That is exactly why we need to place our trust in Jesus Christ. He stands alone in giving us the strength, courage, and serenity to forge ahead in every circumstance. Jesus can decrease and/or remove the obstacles we face, and pave the way, according to His Divine plan he holds especially for each of us.

 “Whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.”

Proverbs 29:25

There are many truly good, trustworthy people in this world and we need to try to surround ourselves with them. However, some people may be unpredictable, let us down, or not always have our best interest at heart at times, making it hard to trust them. Understanding that, we may determine it is best to first trust others in small things, and see how that goes before trusting them in bigger things. However, trusting in Jesus is much different from trusting in other people.

“God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord himself is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”

Isaiah 12:2

Jesus Calms Our Storms

When we place our trust in Jesus, He hears our anguished pleas and answers each prayer in His own special time and way—for our benefit. By so doing, He answers our prayers. He calms the storms we face and even gives us discernment to know who is trustworthy in your midst.

To trust Jesus, we must first seek Him with all our hearts and believe that He is Our Creator, Lord, and Savior. Scripture tells us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

To recap, when we place our trust in Jesus, it is very different than when we trust in other people. For when we place our trust in Him, we soon learn that He is all-loving, all-powerful, ever-present, and all-knowing—no one knows us better than Jesus—even ourselves. So we can trust that all things work for good. When we trust in Him, our Defender, Refuge, Redeemer, and Savior, we receive His discernment, protection, safety, comfort, healing, guidance, and grace. Jesus provides all these things for us when we seek Him, in earnest, and believe and place our trust in Him.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace, as you [place your] trust in Him.”

Romans 15:13
