The risks are worth it...when reflecting on adopting an older child
I decided to look into adopting an older child after reading the book, "Adopting the Older Child" by Claudia Jewett.
I certainly never imagined back then that the older child I raised would grow up and abandon our family for the family members she was taken away from by the state when she was an infant; but that is what has happened.
I will remember the way she looked in her ballet tootoo, her missing teeth smile, her flute playing, her fast running, her boyfriends, her easy laugh, her many prom dresses, her giving birth, her saying, "I love you, Mom."
What is that famous saying? "It is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all..."
Dumped? I guess not...loved...I guess so.

some day, she will tell you just how much she loves you, again. i am sure she appreciates you...... how can she not?
I really feel for you, and appreciate both parts of your "Dumped" essay. Real and raw. I do have an adopted older child (moved in at 7, now 20) who came through what I will assume is a very different path. (See "My Son" if interested.) He is a good kid; of course, he has some issues but I am proud of him. He has a very difficult relationship with my estranged wife, who I think has done a lot (NOT your story, I am sure) to cause what she fears the most--being "dumped" by him.
I will read more of your writing. :)

Separation from your child (and she is) is trauma no matter the cause. What a hard, close to the heart subject - handled with skill and tenderness. And it is the love that will keep you healing. God bless!
