As the flash fiction time of day approaches I am reminded that there is an indefinable transcendence to existence. Some ignore it. Some know It. Some pursue it. Most know: “use it or lose it.”

Stand Walk

It rises
Even as feet feel not
The groundswell

It knows

And it thinks to escape
Ahead of time
Where shadows advance
With fitful irregularity
Forging fearful signs
Some lurking in the fog
Others brazenly blocking light

Stay aware

For even as feet sense not
And shadows know only to hide
Rats and giants
Stalking beneath
Bird and branch
Morph into reality at will
Satiating appetites' demand
Caring not that reason exists

Still

It continues to rise
Steadying against shadowed walls
Prepared
Determined
For It understands
Even as It sometimes limps
The journey remains
Its quest for light sans shadows

It

Defined by survival
Water
Fire
Bone
Weapon
Tool
Man
Such remains the Is of belief

Stand walk

Realize new sensations

New experiences

For to sit
To recline
To succumb
Is the nature of the lifeless

Not the vibrant spirit

You have a way of taking the reader by the hand and leading thru the visuals and images that set forth your meaning, leaving us in the end on a positive note: "For to sit, to recline, to succumb is the nature of the lifeless not the vibrant spirit." Well nuanced.

Somehow, with middle-aged bringing large, padded, reclining chairs with all sorts of "do not get up" conveniences like built-in ashtrays, TV controls, convenience chargers, etc. we tend to spend so much of our time just chilling and snacking in our acquired ways. Golf carts and battery-powered bicycles making trips to the recreation venues much less of a walk and more of a ride.

But like my rehab doctor is telling me, now I can no longer walk or do much of any exercise, "Move!" So, I do, in my wheelchair, all day long and twice with the help of an exercise machine. No longer making tracks in the sand or mud. Wet tracks at the edge of my beloved swimming pools with a diving board for doing flips and other fun… In and out of the water all the time. Moving.

This is a curious one, Odin. Introducing your pieces with image and summation is reader-essential in your work I find, setting the table for your pieces in that space; and it helps me anticipate the nature of your writing. Such a great choice of footprints and forward walk, along with words ‘transcendence to existence.’ The rats and giants segment is loaded with imagery when read aloud. This whole piece, ‘even limping, the journey remains,’ and “the nature of lifeless,” to me is the vibrant spirit ‘resting.’ So much energy poured into this — thank you, and now I must ‘rest.’ :) ~~ djl
