There are multiple words used to give appropriate meaning to solitary living including: hermit, loner, recluse, et al. Add to that: Solitudinarian.

A Solitudinarian’s Legacy

To avoid loneliness,

One only has to seek out those activities,

Thoughts and concentrations

That allow more loving of oneself,

Knowing the frequent source of loneliness

Is the dependence on others for love.

How enlightening to experience

The stare of a rogue cat

The hovering of a hummingbird

The wag of a dog’s tail

And know the “feel good” moment

Is a confirmation of your being at peace with yourself

And realizing how often in the past

You’ve ignored such moments.

Perhaps the key to peace of mind

And feeling good about oneself

Lies in the ability to identify

With the oneness of Nature

And humankind.

To do so

Is to favor Being Love,

To be a meditation of inner quiet,

Where kindness and consideration for both self

And all of Nature

Manifests special comfort

As a work-in-progress,

Striving to bring wakefulness

And confidence in oneself

And all one comes in contact with.

Yes…

Epistemological loneliness

Suggests that a sense of separation

And alienations from others

Makes for down energy,

Possible self-pity,

And often,

A snarky attitude.

However…

For the dedicated writer and poet,

Choosing the solitude,

As did the Renaissance poet-philosopher Petrarch,

Is a state of mind that can rehabilitate the soul,

Correct morals,

Renew affections,

Erase blemishes,

Purge faults,

And reconciles one’s relationship

With his or her choice of a higher power.

Accepting oneself

As only the scribe of infinite creation

Is the rewarding bliss

Available to a solitudinarian remaining

In humble mode.

Thank you, Kent, for sharing something that stirs thought in this reader. Stability is important. Be it emotional or physical, everyone needs a solid ground to build anything on. Perhaps though, it would be better to depend on others for inspiration and not love. Perhaps too, the "epistemological loneliness" you evoke is a kind of intellectual trap. In context to the philosophical theory of knowledge: what could anyone suggest to you that would be of any value except that perhaps you seek too much, and as a result of your seeking you cannot find. Interesting you mentioned Petrarch. The man who is primarily credited for creating the Italian language. A man primarily known for his Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnets and for his epic poem 'Africa'. Your phrase: "Humble mode"... Consider what C.S. Lewis proffered about true humility: "true humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less." Thank you again for sharing these personal and honest thoughts. I wish you well. r
