Mildred Harris’s last V-Mail from Barry a month earlier stated that he loved and missed his wife, ‘Mildy’ and his daughter ‘Jymmi’ more than words could say! And that he was okay, and being transferred to another postal sub-station…

To where? Barry could not say.

The German army launched it’s last major offensive of World War Two known as the ‘Battle of the Bulge’, which— after the German attack — became the Allies counter offensive where American soldiers of the ‘101 First Airborne Division’ fought against vastly overweening odds to hold their advanced position until Allied air power caused the German advance to halt and retreat foretelling the final defeat of Adolph Hitler’s ‘Third Reich’ all but inevitable, as after ‘the Battle of the Bulge’ Germany armies would retreat for the remainder of the war.

Why...Clyde wondered ...was this happening?

Mildred (Mildy) Harris— who’s mind was near ‘always’ on where and how her husband was — had stopped breast feeding then three year old Jymmi two and a half years earlier, and Mildy always wore a bra, yet, so it seemed ten year old Clyde was always there… So it seemed whenever she would lean or bend forward Clyde was there to see whatever he could see…

In all honesty, the little boy had no idea why he would ever, or even go out of his way to see the minuscule flash of white flesh from beneath his Auntie Mildys bra clad breasts.

Why would a ten year old boy even want to see an ‘old’ ladiy's breasts?

An attending cardiologist administering a shot of adrenaline into his heart attempting in vain to revive him, U. S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt unexpectedly died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

The announcement of the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt broadcast over the millions American radios terrifying the nation as —now without the United States of America’s Commander and Chief —there was  a war being fought with husbands and uncles and brothers and cousins fighting in Europe and the Pacific — there was a total of 12,209, 238; near twelve and a quarter million Americans in ‘Harms Way’ without their Commander and Chief.

On the late afternoon of April 12, 1945, Vice President Harry S. Truman, while presiding over the Senate was interrupted and urgently summoned to the White House to receive the unwelcome news that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had died and that he, Harry S. Truman, was now president.

Notation: Harry S. Truman’s parents decided on just an ‘S’ for their son’s middle name because they couldn't agree which of their fathers was most deserving of the naming tradition. So instead, they decided to make it simply an ‘S’ honoring both.

Perhaps the most well-known German response to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s death was that of ‘Joseph Goebbels’, the Nazi propaganda minister. Once he heard the news, Goebbels ordered an aide to break out the best champagne available and get Hitler on the phone. Once he had a line to Hitler, he declared, “My Fuehrer, I congratulate you! Roosevelt is dead!”

Holy Trinity Catholic School for Girls

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

“ ‘Young ladies’…” Sister Mary Benedict said to her class room of thirteen to fifteen year old girls, as loudly tapping her desk with a ruler. “...today is a very sad day for us because our beloved President Roosevelt passed from this life onto his eternal time with our Lord, Jesus. So, please, let us all now bow our heads in prayer.”

Forty-eight girls with heads bowed. With eyes closed. With hands tented in prayer.

“In your hands, O Lord…” Sister Mary Benedict prayed “...we humbly entrust our brother, Franklin Delano Roosevelt whom in this life you embraced with your tender love, deliver him now from every evil and bid him eternal rest...”

With head bowed. With eyes closed. With hands tented in prayer.

All forty-eight hands not actually tented in prayer.

Fourteen year old Margery; ‘Margy’ Binkowski’s mind was not with Lord Jesus, or in prayer. But more so— Big boned, large busted for her age, dark blonde hair; a very attractive fourteen year old girl that— if dressed and made-up properly Margy Binkowski would and could and did pass for a young woman of eighteen years of age and… with that old guy dying in Washington and with all those sailors around?

With head bowed. With eyes closed. With hands tented in apparent prayer Margy’ mind was not on the dead president, ‘or’ Jesus, but on the cute, twenty year old drunken sailor she’d — too young to enter, where she’d be questioned— picked up outside of the ‘Blue Cocktail’.

A grown man actually crying over the death of President Roosevelt, apparently badly in need of comfort, after a few minutes of ‘comforting’ sexually provoking conversation, while comforted by the feel of soft and warm adult sized bare breasts, Margy had no problem talking the sailor into paying for a room in nearby motel where…

Not one of her usually pimple faced kids she’d ‘blown’ or had intercourse with, but a man. A real live, cute, man! With a man sized cock, Margy thought.

Excited beyond mere fourteen year old comprehension. So internally saturated she’d thought he’d slip from within her slick vagina— he was a man, after all, with a man sized penis, after all— that for the first time the sensation of the length and breadth of an adult sized penis within her still youthfully tight vagina…

 And Margy Malinowski loved it!

With head bowed. With eyes closed. With hands tented in apparent prayer Margy’ mind on the velvety sensation of the man’s hairy ass under her caressing hand as the sailor’s hips rose and lowered with each penile penetration and withdrawal...

“...Deliver him now from every evil and bid him eternal rest and welcome him into paradise…” Sister Mary Benedict prayer continuing “... where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.”

Heads and eyes lifting. Sister Mary Benedict along with forty-seven of the forty-eight girls said…

 “Amen.”

Twisting in her seat, the forty-eighth girl sensed excursive moisture wetting the crotch her cotton panties.

Apparently not everyone agonizing over the death of the thirty-second president of the United States of America, as— although for far different reasons — Margery Binkowski along with Adolph Hitler sure weren't.

The German Instrument of Surrender was a legal document effecting the unconditional surrender of the remaining German armed forces to the Allies, and ended World War II in Europe; the signing took place at 11:23 PM PM on May 8, 1945 with the surrender taking effect at 11:23 the same time and day.

Strange how things work out: World war two, at least the war in Europe, officially ended four days short of one month since the death of United States of America’s thirty- second president: ‘President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and ten minutes later, the swearing in of the United States of America’s thirty-third president: ‘President Harry S. Truman.’

May 8, 1945

As the news of Germany’s surrender reached America and the rest of the world, joyous, celebrating boisterous, crowds gathered on the streets in cities and towns and every village throughout the Allied world waving newspapers that declared Victory in Europe — ‘V-E Day’!

Too anxious to wait for the days usual time of mail delivery, with Jymmi seated and held steady on Sharon’s lap; in the front seat between Clyde and herself, Mildy drove ‘Pinks’ ‘27 Chevy open bed truck to the Loveland Train Depot/local Ohio Bell Telephone switchboard office/U.S. Post Office to see if a ‘V’-Mail had arrived from Barry.

Over the past three and a half years, hesitantly, sadly having delivered notification of the deaths of three of Loveland’s two sons and one husband, Herbert, the old Loveland postmaster, fully aware the reason for Mildred Harris’ anxiety— eyes downcast, sadly shaking his head from side to side — “No mail today, Mildy.”

The entire country elated over the defeat of Nazi Germany and secession of the European war, however, there was still the Pacific…

Heading back. “Well, I guess…” Mildy said “...no news is good news.”

Getting restless, beginning to squirm. “Here…” shifting Jymmi from her lap onto Clyde’s “...you hold her the way home.”

Which was fine with four year old Jymmi, that had a baby’s crush on her uncle Clyde and, reaching backward, clasping her hands, held her arms about the boy’s neck Jymmi brought the side of Clyde’s face closer to hers.

“Where you think Uncle Barry is?”

Sighing. “Don’t have any idea, Sherrie.”

United States President Harry S. Truman announced…

When President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, Truman was immediately sworn in, and immediately thereafter had been informed that the United States had been in the process of perfecting an explosive so great that but ‘one’ would be powerful enough to completely destroy a city the size of Chicago along with all living things within for possibly as long as…

Those involved: The physicists, the hundreds of scientists and most certainly whatever military involved with the ‘Manhattan Project’ simply did not know for how long the scorched earth would remain ‘scorched earth’.

Not particularly liked by FDR. FDR stating that he did not actually know Harry Truman; whose political achievements— up until then— had been less than exemplary. Consequently, though never previously informed, ‘now’ President Harry S. Truman learned the full details of the ‘Manhattan Project’.

The horrific knowledge given President Truman, if ever implemented, would become a world changing decision: whether or not to use the ‘atomic bomb’; the world’s first weapon of mass destruction.

How — in the name of God — does any sane human being make such a decision?

Out of a humble Midwestern town, educated only through high school, emerged in the Baptist religion….

Harry S. Truman, a president who ‘ defined God's purpose for America ‘with a mighty heart’— far less than willingly — embraced the monumental task he believed ‘God and history had ordained for him’.

The army general that was in charge of the project brought Truman a file full of reports and details on the ‘Manhattan Project’ telling Truman that the Russians were close to developing the weapon, causing Truman to immediately authorize the continuation of the project agreeing to form an interim committee that would advise the president on ‘how’ and ‘when’ the weapon should be used… And ‘if’ the weapon should be used. And above else, ‘where’ the weapon should be used.

The destructive war in Europe finished. The American casualties in the Pacific continuing to mount, however, with the estimations of American deaths climbing to an additional 80,000 before and until the complete annihilation — as they do ‘not’ surrender — of the entire Japanese army.

Fighting an enemy that would rather die for their…

“Hirohito’, the longest-reigning historical Japanese emperor was revered as a god.

How is a deadly, hard-fought war to be won when fighting a maniacal, cult like army that would rather die for their Emperor than lay their arms down in surrender?

“ ‘Morning, Pink’s.”

“Sarah, it’s me, I got a letter.”

The tone of her voice constrained, unsure of how to react. “Barry?”

“Oh! Sorry, the kids are making me crazy today. Thank God! He’s fine.”

Holding her breath, now breathing. “So?”

“Sorry to be so distracted today…” over her shoulder “...will you three ‘stop’ already!”

Childish background noise coming through the telephone. Speaking above the racket. “Barry sends his love to all of us…” Mildy’s tone becoming more uplifting “...with, of course some ‘gooey’ stuff for Jymmi and me, and he says… Couldn’t give any details, but I get the feeling he thinks it’ll be over soon because, he says they’d offered him a commission if he stays in the army..

August 2, 1945:

Over industrialized Japan

Warning Leaflets!

Through much of World War II, Allied bombers would sometimes drop leaflets warning of impending bombing of a city. The leaflets often told civilians to evacuate, and sometimes encouraged them to push their leaders to surrender.

In the first week of August, 1945, millions of leaflets had been dropped on several industrialized Japanese cities that, due to the shortage of paper were — sarcastically thanking the generosity of American people— used as toilet paper.

Clandestine diplomatic efforts had been made demanding Japan’s unconditional surrender, which those in command had passed off as ‘ ridiculous'!

‘Fibber McGee and Molly’ on the radio, why would it even be on his mind? Why now was he even thinking about it?

Clyde and Sharon had taken baths together, so it seemed all of their lives — at least until 7/4/39 when Ellen caught then two year old Sharon finger flicking her son’s penis like it was some sort of a toy — And even then, the two had seen each other completely naked hundreds of times and there certainly was no secret about either of their nude bodies. So why did it so — in such a strange way, and in such a strang place — bother the boy now.

Sarah had called the two in to do a job both hated.

Due to the war, shipments of needed hardware stock would be shipped to Pink’s at erratic times and in erratic ways. Assorted nuts and bolts were shipped unsorted and unattached in a small wooden barrel, and it was Clyde and Sharon’s job to sort, and when found, screw the nuts onto the bolts, then put them onto a tray for the customer to sort through until finding what was needed.

On this extremely hot August afternoon, sitting cross-legged, facing each other on the blanket covered concrete floor, the mound of miss-matched nuts and bolts between them, Clyde’s eyes — for some unknown, and most certainly incomprehensible reason drawn to the widened inner leg of the shorts Sharon wore, where he could easily see the seam of her vulva.

8:15 AM, Hiroshima, Japan

During the night of 5–6 August, Japanese early warning radar detected the approach of numerous American aircraft headed for the southern part of Japan.

An alert was given and radio broadcasting stopped in many cities, among them Hiroshima. The all-clear was sounded in Hiroshima at 00:05.

At 08:09, Colonel Paul Tibbets started his bomb run and handed control over to his navigator. The release at 08:15 — Hiroshima time— and after falling nearly six miles in forty-three seconds, a blast equal to 12-15,000 tons of TNT,
’ The Little Boy’ exploded 1,968 feet above Hiroshima, instantly killing sixty-nine thousand people.

The plane was eleven and a half miles away before it felt the shock waves from the explosion.

I will be looking for more snippets. You nicely juxtaposed historic events with events happening in Loveland. I liked that. But I thought that Margy was going to end up with a gay sailor. Her thinking about that episode with him while her schoolmates were praying for FDR, for all of his faults, she was involved otherwise.

Reminds me of going to church in college and spending time focused on a cute high school girl in the choir. Never remembering what the sermon was all about.

My Forrest Gump like life had me taking a roomer who paid the rent for the 2nd bedroom in a brand-new A-frame home I rented from a faculty member on leave for his doctorate during the 1970-71 school year when we both were instructors. Dr. JR Calloway Brown was a very colorful old guy chemist from Virginia with a drawl to match it. At one point or another, I learned that he had worked on the Manhattan project. He said he had hypertension (high blood pressure) but I sensed there was more than that. In March 1971 he checked himself into the mental ward at the Mayo Clinic hospital. I took him his shaving kit there. He returned a couple of weeks later. I wasn't the prying type, but he was probably suffering some PTSD.

I tried to look him up, but found nothing except probably ancestors who were preachers in Virginia with the same name.

My uncle entered the war late but served in the 101st Airborne. I don't know if he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, but I know that he guarded the Eagle's Nest and came home with German trophies. He was a hero in his hometown but later showed signs of PTSD as well.
