The art of having a quiet questioning dialog with yourself is often accompanied by an ethereal escort.

Perpetuity’s Undeniability

It was just one night, a night you and I simply decided to take a walk.  Just me and you, my nameless one, who has always been a voice in my ear and never an image I could… you know, relate to.

The moon was bright like I’d never seen it. So bright, I could see the path under the boughs of the trees.  Remember?  Then, out of nowhere, a cloud cover invaded the moon and hid the modest trail.  So, I had to kind of grope my way, fending off tree limbs wanting to, I don’t know.  Play?

It wasn’t until I felt the coarser sand under my bare feet and heard the ocean breakers punctuating your words, that I... do you remember telling me, “All but this moment of raison d''etre is a lie.”  At the water’s edge, I stripped down in the darkness of the moon’s shroud, and without replying or denying your request to be here now, I slipped off my watch and gently let the breaker take it out to sea.   Do you remember?

“Yes.  Funny how a timepiece tries to regulate the future of everything, while you suggest the now of now is so unappreciated.

You opted to have me walk back alone.  “You don’t remember that, do you?”

I didn’t sleep well that night, but. that period of darkness turned into the brightness of day. As I stared out at the everchanging horizon, I smiled.  “How forever the moon and the sun stay, don’t you think?”  I caught myself looking around for you again.  Sorry.

Interesting piece...a part of something larger perhaps? It details a complete moment that means something powerful, so the length isn't a determiner of value, just a reminder that the "pieces" or "moments of time" we add up into a lifetime do have meaning in and of themselves.
Thanks for sharing, Odin.

Gives one the impression of a lost muse, or perhaps a lost love, or perhaps both were the same, and the comfort given and cherished from the relationship does not exist anymore. “All but this moment of raison d'etre is a lie.” So.... the agonists' purpose, his reason for being, the rationalization for his existence, only exists in the moment? Doesn't "I caught myself looking around for you again," negate that notion? There is a melancholic yearning in these words that I can relate to. Also.... it's the first time (in a long while) that you haven't employed line breaks in your work. Thanks for sharing. r

Quirky. I guess because I never had a voice talking to my shoulders, although enduring I have encountered my alter ego doing a story as though I were in it.

I guess there's some symbolism in having a watch "washed out and see." But isn't that what drunks do? Lose track of time living in the present?
