A prosetry-exploration into why so many of the elderly are bid they abandon dreams and face their reality.

Therapeutic Remembrances

Rocking to…

Just a few minutes more,

my horse and me,
almost there.

Remember our primitive forest,
kitchen chairs,
chrome trunks,
yellow and green tree tops,
nesting places for the vultures ,
always present,
always ready to prey?

Rocking around…

Kitchen cabinet canyons,
scarred timber walls,
smooth worn knobs,
magic openings,
caves for hiding.

Rocking through…

Familiar terrain,
approaching tiered rise,
the climb we've never finished,
Trigger and me,
up into air,
just for us.

Rocking forward…

So much ground to cover,

Nurse Norma always eying me,
touching my shoulder.

She knows
we're almost there,
almost ready to climb,
off old Palomino,
once we're to the top.

But…

Not today.

Not enough time.

Group time.

Pill time.

Healing time.

Why do they call it healing time?

Why would I want to heal our memories?

Don’t you agree, Trigger?

Yes, and it is an artifact of time that our remembrances shift and move in tune with the times and our changing understandings of them. Of course, there are a few remembrances that never change, such as the romps we each had with our own version of Trigger. I liked Silver a lot better. Where else can anyone visualize a masked man, a cloud of dust, and a mighty "Hi-O, silver...away!" while getting yanked back into nostalgia?

I'm not sure if I will get to the point where I dream about being Roy Rogers and riding Trigger like he did in the movies… One of the singing cowboys. But I guess that's where some oldsters go when it comes down to the reality of their daily routine.

I escape that daily routine by coming up with my own original stories and singing my own songs, much more akin to rock 'n' roll until I think back on Hank Williams and want to sing about cool, cool water.

Ah, those childhood memories, resurrecting the myriad details that still cling to us as adults, but that also remembers a time of innocence long ago lost. There lives a childhood in all of us that we need to remember.
