“Everyone’s praying for a miracle,” my cancer-ridden friend said, “and their prayers will be answered. If I beat this, it will truly be a miracle. But the biggest miracle of all will be my passing. After all, we’re put on earth to prepare for heaven. I’m looking forward to seeing my Father face-to-face and to finally being at peace.”
From that day on, she methodically planned for death. She finalized her will, put her heir’s name on her bank accounts, and arranged for her cremation and memorial service. Having decided she wanted to die at home with her beloved granddaughter, she ordered a hospital bed and hospice.
When all her material preparations were made, she said good-bye to all her friends and family, trying to give them the sense of joy she felt. Finally, she took herself off her infusions, quit taking all her chemotherapy medications and let nature take its course
From that day on, she limited her visitors to her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, one companion/friend, and her priest.
I have been told she spent most of her time in prayer. When she had the energy, she tried to comfort her granddaughter. Through it all, she never complained or showed fear. She kept her eyes firmly on her goal.
When she finally passed, I didn’t cry. While I felt sorry for myself, I was happy she had finally found peace and pictured her in the heaven she so firmly believed in. It’s been four years and I still miss our long conversations and am still inspired by her.
