I am a magician. I do not practice sleight of hand or illusions, but true magic. I am not a guest at children’s parties, a TV entertainer, or a Vegas headliner, but a true wizard.
I first became aware of my powers about 25 years ago. ‘Aunt Sandy will protect me,” my nephew sobbed as he flew across the room to wrap his arms around my legs. I picked him up, held him tight, and listened to him explain that his room was inhabited by monsters who were just lying in wait for him to fall asleep. I rocked him back and forth murmuring soothingly until he fell asleep in my arms. Thinking I had the problem solved, I gently placed him back in bed and crept out of his room.
A few hours later I was awakened by pitiful screams. I raced to his room to chase away the evil that threatened him. I tried everything. I held him tight, I turned on a night light, I took a broom and swept the creatures out from under his bed into a sheet. We solemnly shook the sheet out of his window, ridding the room of the creatures. We both went back to sleep. You guessed it, a few hours later, he was again sobbing fearfully.
This time I had an inspiration. I had a plastic key ring charm that held glitter suspended in oil. When it was shaken, the glitter moved in the oil and glowed in the dark. I quickly took the fob off my key chain, handed it to my nephew, said a magical incantation over it, and told him it was a magic wand that would nprotect him as he slept. He immediately calmed and slept through that night and the next and the next, all the while clutching his magic wand.
I haven’t had much call to practice my magic through the years and indeed, had all but forgotten about it. Then just recently I was helping my sister, Pat, declutter her home. There we were going through the boxes in the attic when we came across a bunch of her son’s childhood toys. Thrown in a box with his train sets and army men was the ‘magic wand’. I reached out to touch it and my whole body was suffused with warmth. I conjured up an image of Nathan looking at me with so much trust I felt momentarily undone. That wand still held its magic power. It must have been a very powerful spell I cast on that night so long ago.
Now that you have heard my tale of magic, I bet you can come up with a few times in your life when you have also banished evil in an attempt to protect and preserve innocence. For you see, regardless of what all the famous illusionists say, magic is real and it exists in all of us who have ever loved a small child.
