They show up in unexpected places along the walking path. There’s a family of seven circling the base of a tree, a couple perching on a boulder, and several nestling in a flower bed. The first time I spotted the colorful little rubber duckies, I giggled. The dog tugging at the end of my leash was the only thing preventing me from reaching down and squeezing one. I’m still cheered by the sight. My lips curl up into a smile, and my footsteps slow as I greet each one by name.
I don’t know who scattered the ducks around, but I do feel a certain kinship with them. After all, we both belong to the Society to Spread Smiles (Smiles Club). I’m sure you’ve seen us. We’re the total strangers that say hello at the grocery store, compliment you on your appearance, or pause to let you enter the flow of traffic. We’re the friends and neighbors who send you greeting cards for no reason, bake you cookies, or call to chat when you are going through a bad time.
If you stop to think about it, you will probably realize you know quite a few members of the Smiles Club. Why, you yourself may already be an honorary member, frequently greeting the people you meet throughout the day. Whether or not you already smile at passersby, you can officially join the club very easily. Membership is free. Simply look in the mirror, smile, and pledge to do one nice thing for yourself and one nice thing for someone else every day.
Becoming a bona fide member doesn't have to cost anything and the rewards are great. You will begin to see yourself as both a valued and valuable member of society. You will be more confident, for there is no room for self-doubt in a positive person. And you will be more likely to meet other members of the Smiles Club. It will seem like not a day goes by without someone showering you with good will. On the other hand, grumpy people will soon recede into the background, for the marks left by smiles build up to form a strong barrier that negativity can’t possibly penetrate.
