A short flash fiction look at the epidemic of aloneness in this country, both urban and rural, that some accept and embrace, while others deem it living in solitary confinement. Too few call the hotline for assistance and thus, their lives remain silently desperate.

Waiting Room

Bleak was his notion of the converted utility room to serve as his home

Waiting for that something to happen

That event

Person

Postal delivery

Even the pizza man

Or woman

Could be…

Anything was better than silence

His windowless room

Phone never ringing

Computer inbox empty

Phone text without even an inquiry

A ‘Just checking in” message

No…

Perhaps fate was playing its hand coyly with him

But he had experienced the waiting room for a long time

And, oh, how he stared at the keyhole with anticipation

That small opening to the light from the hall

If only a human shadow would step forward and block it.

A highly thought-provoking read.
Once I had absorbed the options I began to wonder; Is it a waiting room to be trapped inside... or are we finally 'outside' the door of the rat-race, our minds free to imagine and create inhindered.

In which case; were we so heavily dependent on that societal merry-go-round, that we find it hard to function without all of its limitations and expectations as guidelines.

It occurs to me that this is a good time to explore the more spiritual aspects of life, in which the events that pass by are signs of the lessons learned.
After all; what is life, if not a cycle of learning and experiencing the many layers of existence.

There is ebb and flow in all things human. But when we do touch another human soul, (if only for a season) it is best to do so as another human soul. Being seen and understood by someone is a great blessing. One that should never be taken for granted. Perhaps, (as Rumi proffered) our task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers we have built within ourselves against it. Thanks for sharing. r

Wow! This is huge, Odin. You have a propensity to swing upwards with your fountain pen, that flourishment the tremendous curtain coming down and the audience left in their seats to ‘recover’. This is one of those. There is achefulness inside the room you put us in, the last three lines and the image together being able to deliver the haunt. Long ago, in my home-alone mother of two part of my story, the diaper delivery woman was the human shadow stepping forward to ask if she could please have a glass of water on that hot day. She, in just that moment, was my glass of water. ~~ djl

A poignant reminder, Odin. Many people feel lonely but hate to bother other people--even friends and family. I find it rewarding to spend time with an individual, better than in a crowd. I get so much from visiting my elderly neighbors, enlivens my soul. Thanks for sharing. Have a blessed Easter weekend.

Yes, another malady of growing older and having all of your close friends die. And then, of course, there are those that even in high school can't fit in. End up living in the way you describe not related to anyone really but becoming isolated and lonely.
