In this piece of flash fiction, some objects personified reveal little. Others only know how to reveal. Sometimes, reality mimics fiction for relief. (Image by Pinterest

His Mirror Now

This one also got most everything, but left behind
her 2-sided full length mirror.

No reason.

Just left it.

It’s kept him company at least.
Living in an empty room,
save an air mattress and hanging lightbulb,

One side faces the front door to reflect reality,
the other to invite memory’s ghosts.

Alone in his studio apt,
He’s learned to come at the mirror sideways,
avoiding seeing himself,
but giving plenty of room for yesterday’s shadows
to reflect him a semblance of company.

One side lets the front door stare back at him,
The flip side prefers staring at a blank wall
where once hung their wedding picture,
now but a couple of nail holes.

So…

It’s been months now,
and neither side of the mirror
has cast any invited images,
satisfied to merely admire itself.

He continues standing to the side,
moist eyes waiting for a visitor,
live or ghostly.

Sure looks like Ron resonated with the pain of this. Stinging rubber bullets of ricocheting memories…that spells some real understanding. The story within here is expansively expressed by the shockingly-lonely standing mirror paired with the vacancy sign in the window of a soul alone in the aloneness even a mirror’s story of the story. “He’s learned to come at the mirror sideways,” — crushing. Excellently-composed conveyance. Wincingly understandable. ~~ djl

Short but poignant. So many have faced this reality. Being left quite empty inside… But with something she forgot constantly there as a reminder. And in this case, the very object that can reflect memories like stinging rubber bullets that bounce back and forth in the reflection.
