A flash fiction exploration into why some of us worry about the future. Others shrug with a C’est la vie and pop another brewski.

Mr. Future’s Greeting

Future is a particularly arrogant sort.

Why so much effort to conceal from us?

Most likely the reason has to do with

Sympathy or cruelty.

Is it true that most of us are destined to fear it/him?

After all

We’ve never been properly introduced,

Even though we are neighbors,

Eyeing each other every day,

Even occasionally running into each other.

You know,

Just standing there,

Embarrassed and awkward,

As we pretend to be drawn away

By some children skipping down the sidewalk to school.

Or…

It might be a sparrow fending off a pigeon

As they both vie for the pizza crust under a hearse

Overloaded with flowers,

Parked in front of an old gray stone church.

Yeah…

On that kind of day,

Mr. Future is being coy with his captious exposure.

Couldn’t he at least wave

Or give us the finger?

Here is my take: We cannot ignore this much about the future: our need for food, fuel, housing, health care, transportation, and education. Give an affordable percentage to the poor, and save a little for others when we depart the scene. Overlay all that with tending to our spiritual beliefs whatever they are. That helps to follow our own convictions. The rest is chance, a little opportunity, and a lot of bad luck. Do not hurt, maim, or kill--unless the SOB is aiming at you. You will never be wealthy unless you need the least. Examine life, sing if you can, dance a little, tell stories (not lies), and always act bravely even if you are shitting in your pants. Somebody has to set an example. Beyond that, carry a ball bat. You never know when a ball might be coming at you that you can hit out of the ball park.

I, along with many others are less poetic about our final future. I am quite pleased with the legacy of books, stories and poems that I've generated in the 30 years I've been actively writing for myself and not for money for life not of my own.

You won't see me anticipating a brand-new hearse, lavish coffin, and regal burial place that money can buy and few will visit. Less and less in the coming years ahead. But what of one's legacy? Is there enough to keep memory alive? I think so. And can rest in peace when that time comes whether it be sooner or later.

I was gripped in a series of bubble-bursting thoughts after reading this. 'C'est la vie' - 'Det er livet' - 'So ist das Leben' - 'Hadha haa alhayaa' - 'O ia ke ola' - 'Sin beatha' - THAT'S LIFE! For better or for worse. Staying in the present, I've learned, is far more healing. We were born fearless, and what happens to that fearlessness along the way is a mystery. Being too preoccupied with the future is futile. It's going to happen, the way it's going to happen. And whether one believes or not, the prophecies will all be fulfilled. Thanks for your thoughts. Now I have to meditate a bit. Peace and health... r
