A child with disabilities tells others not to feel sorry for him.
Please do not feel sorry for me! I am just like you, in more ways than you may realize!
For starters, I have two eyes, two ears, one nose, one mouth, two arms, and two legs, just as you do!
I have a brain, and I can make decisions for myself; and I can talk and write and read, too! I am NOT stupid!
I wear clothes, too, and I know what I like or don't like in the way of clothes, food, music, or whatever!
The ONLY thing is that I can't walk as well as a lot of you. This is why I need a wheelchair, or use crutches to walk for shorter trips; my legs don't work as well as yours do, and it isn't MY fault that I am this way! I just happen to have a disease that is making my muscles weak, and unfortunately, unless there is a cure in the next few years or so, I am going to die. My disease is fatal, but I am not scared of dying. For one thing, I happen to have Jesus in my heart, and that is always a good thing, don't you think??
I know I have a lot of problems; but you making fun of me or calling attention to my problems is NOT going to help me ONE BIT!! If anything, it is only going to make me mad; and you DON'T want to make me mad! I have a temper; and besides, if you get me mad enough, I just may run over your feet with my wheelchair! Now just imagine how painful THAT may be! So, if you are wise, please keep your comments to yourself, so that doesn't happen!
Give me a chance, and let me do things for myself. If I need help, I will say so; and besides, I have my dog, "Ginger", to help me. But just let me try first instead of trying to horn in and take over or second-guessing me, like I don't have a brain in my head!
And just because I happen to be disabled DOESN'T make me an alien from outer space! I am a kid, too, just like you are, and I wish you'd treat me with a little in the way of respect or compassion! When you are mean to me, you only end up hurting my feelings; and that is NOT a nice thing to do! How would you like it if I did this same thing to YOU? Or, better yet, try to put yourself in my place. Imagine what it would be like to have to sit in a wheelchair day in and day out or wear braces on your legs; or have muscles that don't work right. You wouldn't like it much now, would you? Well, then, just use your head and try to remember that the next time you see me in my wheelchair; because one day, that could be YOU!
