A story about a woman Louisiana Sandusky befriended while the woman was in the hospital. (She was in an elevator when it fell; and she was rendered a quadriplegic. Added to the stress of the situation is the fact that Melissa's mother is seriously disabled with multiple sclerosis.)
Another person who has come into my life is a young Hispanic woman named Melissa Escamilla (pronounced Ess ka mee yah). Melissa Escamilla is only in her late 20's, but her beauty is stunning. She has short, spiked hair of dark red that is done in a punk rock style cut, and big, brown eyes; and she is rather thin in build. She and I met when she was injured in an elevator accident about two years ago, and I was one of the nurses who took care of her during her hospital stay.
Melissa had been working at a bank here in Nashville, and she worked on an upper floor; and while going to leave for her break, the elevator she was on at the time happened to give way; and it plummeted to the floor. She was the only one in the elevator, but she was seriously injured as a result of the fall. She broke her neck in the fall, and she was paralyzed from the neck on down. She is still paralyzed today, and she is in an electric wheelchair that she can control with a lever that she pushes with her chin. She was in the hospital for several months; and she had extensive rehabilative treatment to get her moving again (or as best as she could, regarding her situation). During her hospital stay, she and I became good friends; and it was during her stay in the hospital when I also met her older brother, "Paco" (he is in the service; he is presently in the Persian Gulf as a part of the war on terrorism), and their mother, Maria, who has multiple sclerosis and requires the aid of Lofstrand crutches when walking.
Melissa has always lived in the metropolitan Nashville area; and she loved her job at the bank. But now her future is uncertain; but she is determined to overcome her disabilities and try to get back to some semblence of a normal life. She is busy looking for another job (but is often met with resistance), and she stays with her ailing mother and has a friend help her and her mother both. Her friend cooks and cleans for them both, and she takes care of their personal needs and affairs. She is there as a means of support and aid.
I regularly correspond with Melissa via e-mail or phone calls; and I take them some extra food if I have any; and I also keep tabs on how she is doing. She seems to be doing quite well for herself; but her mother has taken a turn for the worse and may end up going into a nursing facility. Her mother has been falling more than she has been, and the other day she had to get stitches in her head after a particularly nasty fall. As you can very well imagine, this upset Melissa very much; and she is beside herself with worry. But I have been trying my best to calm her fears, and I am there to help her through this latest crisis. She wasn't home at the time her mother fell (she was looking for work), and she feels that she should have been there for her; and she feels that she has failed her mother. I tell her she is being silly, but so far I haven't been able to convince her much.
She is worried about what is going to become of her should her mother go into a nursing facility, but I tell her don't worry about that and go on, and that her mother is going to be okay after a few days. (Her mother is in the hospital for observation, and she is going to be okay.) I can understand her situation, but I feel that she needs to worry more about herself and take care of her needs.
