A group of children fight to educate others about disability.
|
We may not look like much to you (that is, you may notice that we are disabled in different ways), but we are more alike than you think we are.
For starters, even despite the crutches, wheelchairs, hearing aids, glasses, or whatever else we may need in our daily lives, we have the same dreams, hopes, aspirations, worries, concerns, and feelings that you have. We are just as concerned about the impending war with Iraq, too, just as you are; and we, too, would love to see terrorism come to an end and peace return to our land. We, too, worry about the ever-skyrocketing prices, whether our families can afford to take care of us or afford insurance for us, and worry about things that happen in our neighborhoods.
We like to do things, too, be it reading, watching tv, playing video games, playing sports, being with our friends when we are not in school, or going on vacation with our folks; and we love to meet other people, too, just as you do. But don't think for a minute that, just because we are using crutches, wheelchairs, or whatever, we are any less than you. We are just like you, only we have disabilities. Sure, some of our disabilities are obvious, but others are not. Some of us have what is known as "hidden disabilities". You may not be able to see our disabilities, but they are there, too, just the same. Some of us are learning disabled, and some of us have seizures and have to take medications to help control them. Or we may have emotional problems. But we are disabled, too, just like our friends who rely on wheelchairs or crutches to get around, or just like our friends who are hearing impaired or blind.
So next time you see us, take some time to say hello and get to know us. You will find kids who are just like yourselves, and you will find that we are kids who love to make new friends wherever we go! You just may be surprised at how much you can learn during the short time you are with us! We can teach you a lot! :)
